Best Vancouver neighbourhoods for your eating habits
April 12, 2016
Yes, everyone has to eat, every single day. That makes everyone a "foodie," as obnoxious as that label may sound to you. So since you have to access food to live, why not live around the kind of food you love? Here are the best Vancouver neighbourhoods for your eating habits.
If you live to cook...

Abbotsford is the place where you can buy a few acres of land for cheaper than a 600-sq.-ft. condo in the city. Alternately, most neighbourhoods on the East Side host their own community gardens. Trout Lake community Centre is just one with its own garden and community orchard, and you can now have your own chickens and bees anywhere in Vancouver.
Who cares about eating? Get me a drink!
The place with the most local drinking establishments has got to be Gastown. Six Acres, The Diamond, The Lamplighter, The Metropole Community Pub, Alibi Room… and if you have to consume something to soak up all the booze, there’s the excellent Irish Heather Gastropub. If you lived here, think of all the money you’d save on taxis (12-step programs also nearby).
If you love (good) fast food...
Long lingering meals not your thing? Denman and Davie Streets in the West End have quick and cheap options in everything from shawarma and falafels to Thai take-away, to ramen, hamburgers and sushi. You can now start using your kitchen to store your snowboard, bicycle, and vinyl record and shoe collections.
If your office is a café...
SoMa (South Main) has so many cafés you’ll never wear out your welcome, even if you sit there blogging while nursing one cappuccino for three hours a day. Gene, 49th Parallel (also good for your doughnut craving), JJ Bean, and up a little ways, there’s Bean Around the World, Coco et Olive, Liberty, Shaktea, and it seems more are popping up every day.
If you love potluck dinners...
Kensington-Cedar Cottage is an amazingly diverse, family-oriented, friendly place. Block parties, dog walking and school events are great ways to introduce neighbours, and the result is many a delicious potluck. Bonus points if you come from a culture with exotic food to introduce to people, but you can never go wrong with a good old mac & cheese.
