Kitchens are one of my favourite spaces to design, style and decorate. They are the heart of the home and also our most requested design project. As a result, I am always keeping up-to-date with the latest in kitchen design.

The trend that I love for 2018 is moody cabinetry. Darker cabinets are a way to make a bold statement. However, if your kitchen isn’t dark and moody, not to worry! There are also plenty of great styling tricks that will help keep you and your kitchen ahead of the trend curve. When it comes to the finishing touches in any kitchen, it’s all about the styling.

A great way to modernize your kitchen is with an accent colour – whether it’s painting a feature wall or through your small appliances and cookware. Blues are always eye-catching and classy, while red can add a real pop and modern twist. If you prefer a more muted tone-on-tone look, natural wood elements and warm metals such as brass will add a nice balance.

A popular trend in kitchen styling is to prop your counters with bigger scaled items than normal – maybe using a big, beautiful open cookbook or large antique vase. Even oversized florals or leafy branches will do the trick. A word to the styling wise: don’t place items on your counter that don’t belong in the kitchen. Always keep your space looking natural and real.

Finally, it’s important to leave some empty areas, show some space and be sure to keep it clean and tidy. A few modern styling elements can keep your kitchen looking stylish and current regardless of its age.
