Five of Calgary's up-and-coming neighbourhoods
July 28, 2015
Everyone wants the inside scoop on the next hotspots to live. Here are 5 Calgary neighbourhoods that are just on the cusp of becoming gentrified, trendy and all around desirable for residents.
Bowness
One of Calgary's up-and-coming neighbourhoods includes Bowness. North of downtown and close to the Bow River, this community is still a little rough around the edges and rundown in parts. However, beautification efforts and the University Crossing residential/retail development in 2016 makes this a soon-to-be hotspot for professionals and academics that want to be close to the University.
Ramsay
It’s true you’ll find a meat processing plant, rundown watering holes and a transient population in the Southeast. However, you’re also starting to see infills, co-working spaces in heritage buildings, cool coffee shops and LRT construction hinting at a new train station soon.
Renfrew
Not that long ago Bridgeland was still considered ‘sketchy’ but in 2015 everyone who wants to live here. Just up the hill is Renfrew which hasn’t gained the same level of hype yet, meaning renters and buyers have more affordable options. You still have Bridgeland’s shops, cafes and parks within walking distance, not to mention a few choice brunch spots and restaurants right on Edmonton Trail.
Currie Barracks
What used to be a military HQ is now slated for substantial development known as ‘the new historic district’. Developers are advertising ample green space, a farmer’s market, brownstone housing and luxury high-rises. This urban village will appeal to well-to do Calgarians but expect to pay for it.

Forest Lawn
International Avenue is slowly losing its bad reputation for crime thanks to an increased police presence but the gentrification process will take a few more years. Anyone wanting very affordable housing will find it here (something hard to find in Calgary). You’ll also find some of the best ethnic food in town and new artist studios. Think long term.
