Getting your home ready for winter may seem like a big task. From cleaning out gutters to winterizing windows and doors, all of these tasks add up – but they also save you from surprises down the road. Here are some simple things you can do to get your home ready for winter. Each of these tasks can save you money and keep you cozy once the snow starts to fly.

1. Winterize your deck

Decks are often fondly used in the summer and completely forgotten in the winter, but we often expect them to weather the harsh elements. To prep your deck for winter, start by cleaning all of your furniture and bringing it in along with any pots and planters so they’ll be ready for spring. After that, sweep the deck and get your winter tools, like snow shovels, out and easily accessible.

2. Check your windows and doors

Windows and doors are your first line of defence against the winter chill. Check each and every window and door in your home, making sure they’re in tip-top shape. If you notice any damage, especially in the frames, get these problems addressed immediately. If you ignore them, your heating bills could skyrocket during the winter months.

3. Prep the fireplace

There are few things more comforting than curling up next to a warm fire on a cold day. If you have a fireplace, be sure to clean out all the old ash and get a pile of wood ready for your first fire. Regular fireplace users will also want to get their chimneys swept annually. Be sure to check the damper for drafts as well.

4. Take a peek at your roof

Damaged or broken tiles need to be replaced before winter hits, otherwise you could pay more for heat and experience water damage in the spring. You’ll also want to clean out your gutters and make sure they’re securely fastened for when they carry heavy water away from your home.

As a homeowner, you’ll want to get your home ready for winter to save time and money. Even the smallest tasks, such as bringing in outdoor furniture, can extend the lifespan of your favourite items. And by checking your home for potential leaks and openings, you can cut down on your utility bills so you’ll have more cash during those frosty months.
