Many changes ahead for False Creek

False Creek has a large overhaul on the horizon. Once all of the changes on the agenda have taken place, it will be a completely revamped neighbourhood.

For starters, a group of highrises will be built on the northern side of False Creek to the south and east of Rogers Arena, which the City of Vancouver is touting as a new community. This new community will be to the south of the SkyTrain tracks and to the west of Carrall Street.

Many changes are taking place in terms of road infrastructure, too. Pacific Boulevard will be torn down between Pat Quinn Way and Quebec Street and replaced with a major road that will be four lanes east of Main and six lanes west of Main.

Also, a new connector road will be built from Gore Avenue across the False Creek Flats, which will run either to Malkin or to National Street. This project will include building an overpass extending to Clark Drive above the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe train tracks by Vernon Drive.

A new four-lane Georgia Street ramp will finally be built between Georgia Street and Pacific Boulevard.

A little more green space is coming to the area, too, in the form of an elevated linear park, which will be built where the existing Dunsmuir Viaduct connects to downtown. Cyclists and pedestrians will be able to use this new park to enter the downtown area.

Once the viaducts are demolished, the long-delayed extension to Creekside Park will finally be built. Located south of the SkyTrain tracks and east of Carrall, this extension will join with Science World’s current waterfront park.

Also, the new St. Paul’s Hospital will be built in the lot that was once home to the Great Northern railway station and tracks.
