On Saturday, June 4, the Georgie Awards, presented by the Canadian Home Builders’ Association of British Columbia (CHBA B.C.), returned to Vancouver as a live, in-person event for the first time in two years. The atmosphere was lively and convivial as 700 members of B.C.’s dynamic home-building industry attended the sold-out gala at the Hyatt Regency in downtown.

This year marked the 30th anniversary of these prestigious awards and, as always, showcased the innovation, creativity, and excellence of new-home construction, renovations, and interior design from across the province. While submissions were up 11 percent over 2021, only 49 were crowned the best of the best.

“The housing market continues to be a favourite topic of conversation across the province, from the water cooler to the dinner table to the backyard barbecue, and the Georgie Awards are a special night for our members and guests to celebrate their projects from the past year,” said CHBA B.C. president, Cassidy deVeer. “The well-deserved winners and finalists represent the best single-family homes, multi-family developments, interior design and outdoor spaces in the B.C. residential construction industry.”

CHBA B.C. is the leading advocate for B.C.’s residential construction industry. In 2020 alone, the industry provided more than 180,000 on- and off-site jobs and paid $12 billion in wages.

Lively entertainment

This year’s Monopoly theme was clearly a hit as attendees searched for their company’s “property” along the boardwalks. Mr. Monopoly made an appearance throughout the evening, happy to pose for photos.
Prior to the grand reveal of winners, Duo Transcend entertained as the two roller skaters—yes, that’s the old-fashioned kind with four pairs of rollers—executed death-defying spins at dizzying speeds on a tabletop that appeared smaller than the dining tables. But finally, it was time to find out the winners of the 2022 Georgie Awards.

And the winners are…

Rounding out a successful 2022 awards season, Vesta Properties’ Brookswood Mills took top honours in four categories including two Grand Georgies for Residential Community of the Year and Single-Family Production Home Builder of the Year. Part of the 74-acre, Latimer Heights master-planned community in Langley, Brookswood Mills gave buyers a rare opportunity to purchase a single-family home in one of the Fraser Valley’s most popular cities.

Foxridge Homes struck gold in three categories including Best Single Family Home Production Development for Westbrooke at Willoughby. Also weighing in with three wins were Miracon’s Foundry Place and Forge Properties’ Fantom midrise in White Rock.

In addition to setting a new record for the number of submissions, the 30th Georgie Awards proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that it’s about quality and vision, regardless of how long a company has been in existence. Comox-based newcomer J Zsiros Construction was awarded three Georgies including Best Energy Labelled Custom Home. Best Energy Labelled Whole House Renovation went to Coast Essential Construction for Squamish Deep Energy Retrofit that converted an early 1980’s home into a modern architecture and Near Zero energy building. And in Coquitlam, Dolomiti Homes wowed the judges with Vista, a multi-family low-rise that featured a 360-degree rooftop deck to provide residents with a lavish outdoor space, since the city-mandated left-turn lane in front had significantly reduced ground-level outdoor space.
