Burnaby

Introduction

Located in Burnaby, Edmonds’ boundaries are Edmonds Street to the northwest, 6th Street to the northeast, 10th Avenue to the southeast and Kingsway to the southwest. Burnaby was voted Best Run City in Canada in 2009! With the fantastic facilities at Edmonds Community Centre, it’s easy to grab a workout in this neighbourhood, rain or shine.

Lifestyle

Family fun is the name of the game in Edmonds. The new Edmonds community centre offers programs for all ages. Between local Highgate mall and nearby Metrotown, it’s also a shopper’s paradise. Nearby Deer Lake Park provides the best of all worlds: a taste of nature in its lakeside trail complimented by the culture on offer at Burnaby Art Gallery and Burnaby Village Museum.

The Vibe

Families love Edmonds for its central location, new community centre, accessibility to three elementary schools and public library. The shops at Highgate Mall (which include a Save-On-Foods and a Shoppers Drug Mart) offer nearby retail convenience. It’s a great neighbourhood for those who love the outdoors, due to its proximity to Robert Burnaby Park, which has a children’s playground, fantastic trails, tennis courts and an outdoor pool.

Meet the Neighbours

In 2006 (according to that year’s Census) the bulk of Edmond’s population lies in the age range of 20-44 (37 per cent). At this same time, immigrants made up 59 per cent of the neighbourhood’s population. Leading the pack of immigrant groups were those from Afghanistan, at 170 recent immigrants.

In the Area

The recently completed Edmonds Community Centre is a neighbourhood hub offering an array of services to a wide range of ages in the area. At the primary school level, the area is served by Edmonds Community School, Clinton Elementary and Windsor Elementary, and at the secondary school level, it is served by Burnaby South Secondary. There are also two post-secondary institutions in the area: British Columbia Institute of Technology and Douglas College.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles

It’s easy to get to and from Edmonds to just about anywhere on the Lower Mainland. It’s on the Kingsway, which makes it an easy drive to other parts of Metro Vancouver. It is also well served by public transit, as it’s right on the Expo and Millennium SkyTrain (Metrotown, Edmonds and Royal Oak Stations).

The Good, the Bad & the Rest

In part due to its proximity to the City of Vancouver, Burnaby as a whole is not the cheapest suburb to live in. There are, however, such a wide range of services in Edmonds, that you can choose to spend your money on a coffee at Tim Horton’s or to savour an expensive espresso-based drink at a high-end coffee shop, depending on your mood or budget.
