Lake Summerside

Edmonton

Introduction

Lake Summerside is an established neighbourhood located south of Ellerslie Road between 66th street and Parsons Road. It’s most distinct feature is the 28-ft. deep, 32-acre lake, designed for swimming, fishing and non-motorized boating that is exclusive to members of the Lake Summerside Residents Association. With quick access to South Edmonton Common and the Edmonton International Airport, Lake Summerside combines city living with lakeside leisure.

Lifestyle

Residents of Lake Summerside enjoy the laid back feeling of life on the lake. Paddle boat, kayak and canoe rentals are available, should you feel like getting out of your lounge chair. Kids will enjoy the lakeside playground, sandy beach and surrounding lawns. In the winter the lake is converted to a skating rink and winter programming is offered by the residents association.

The Vibe

Rows of cottage-like homes line up behind green boulevards. The wide sidewalks are busy with young parents pushing baby strollers and tikes learning to ride without training wheels, likely on their way to the Lake for a day of fun at the beach. A to-do list of errands is easily tackled with commercial services being so close, leaving more time to spend with family at the lake.

Meet the Neighbours

Lake Summerside is a family neighbourhood. Although there are young professionals, empty nesters and seniors residing here, it is obvious young parents have chosen this safe and friendly neighbourhood to raise their children and start their families. Income levels among residents vary, due to the wide range of housing options available here.

In the Area

The cost of rent seems to vary depending on the unit’s distance from the beach. Rent is not necessarily cheap, but reasonable. Most of the restaurants, cafes and retail stores in the Lake Summerside area are part of a franchise. The price of services, a meal or a pint of beer will be the same here as it is anywhere else.

The development of Lake Summerside began before Edmonton experienced its massive economic boom and some residents got in before There are bus routes that come through the area and nearby neighbourhoods are easily accessible. Largely, Lake Summerside is a car-dependant neighbourhood. Access to major freeways makes getting around the rest of the city easy enough, but expect a longer commute to downtown or anywhere north of the river.

The Good, the Bad & the Rest

All commercial and community services are available in close proximity to Lake Summerside. Shopping centres, supermarkets, restaurants, cafes and bars run along Ellerslie Road. There are schools, dental and medical centres right in the neighbourhood and major hospitals within a few minute’s drive. Movie theatres and larger box stores can be found at nearby South Edmonton Common.

Dollars & Sense

About three-fourths of the dwellings in Lake Summerside are detached homes, while the other 25 per cent is split between apartments and townhome style condos. The latter has provided some affordable starter options; homebuyers can find a new townhome from the $270s, or a condo from the $180s, which is comparative to nearby neighbourhoods. Homebuyers are also renting suites in their homes, which supports the rental market in the area.
