If you’re thinking of renting in Calgary, then you better get your cowboy boots and hat ready! Known as “Stampede City,” Calgary is a thriving city located in the heart of the prairies. Alberta’s booming economy is a key attraction for relocating and new Canadians alike, while Calgary’s proximity to the Rockies is a huge draw for tourists. So, if you’re new to the city or looking for a new place to rent, using the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp.’s (CMHC) Rental Market Report from October 2013, we’ve identified five affordable areas to rent a two-bedroom apartment.
1. Southeast
Away from the hustle and bustle of the downtown core, this quadrant is ideal for families and those looking for a tranquil lifestyle. There are more than 30 residential neighbourhoods such as Inglewood and Ramsay, as well as abundant parks such as Beaverdam Flats, Reader Rack Garden and Pearce Estate Park. Southeast Calgary is also one of the cheapest areas to rent, as the average price for a two-bedroom apartment is $1,075.2. North Hill
Located just north of downtown, this is a popular rental area for students because two post-secondary institutions, SAIT Polytechnic and ACAD, are nearby. Aside from the prime location, the rent is affordable. Average rent for a two-bedroom apartment is $1,139.3. Southwest
It’s all about luxury in this quadrant, as it is home to some of Calgary’s wealthiest neighbourhoods such as Mount Royal and Scarboro. Proximity to downtown makes it a desirable place among young professionals and 20-somethings to live. Despite the high-end reputation, Southwest Calgary ranks as the city’s third most affordable area to rent. Since many of the apartment buildings were built in the 1960s and 70s, the rent is more affordable. The average two-bedroom apartment is $1,173.4. Northwest
This suburban community is perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. Neighbourhoods such as Banff Trail, Briar Hill and Capitol Hill are just a stone’s throw away from the Rockies – making it easy to take advantage of the many recreational activities. So while Northwest Calgary is close enough to downtown, it certainly doesn’t have the same price tag, as the average two-bedroom apartment is $1,179.5. Northeast
One of the perks of living in Calgary’s smallest quadrant is being close to everything – whether it’s shopping centres, schools or recreational facilities, everything is nearby. Neighbourhoods such as Bridgeland, Renfrew and Tuxedo Park are especially great for frequent flyers and commuters, as they provide easy access to the airport and the downtown core via the C-Train – Calgary’s LRT system. A two-bedroom apartment here is $1,205.About Tal Klachook
