Calgarians sure love their coffee – that’s why it's not a surprise that every neighbourhood in Calgary has its own quintessential independent coffee shop. From coffee roasters to toast menus to the best baristas in the city, these seven indie coffee shops are a must visit for anyone who needs more than just a caffeine fix.
Fratello Analog
Where: 740 17th Ave. SW
This 17th Ave. SW staple is known for their buzzing café, their locally roasted coffee beans under the label Fratello and the amazing people watching year round. The name Analog was inspired by the owners’ love of vinyl records, many of which ended up making their way on to the shelves of the café.
Corbeaux Bakehouse
Where: 730 17th Ave. SW
This elegant bakery, restaurant and café all-in-one has quickly become a buzzing destination on 17th Avenue SW. Taking the place of the popular Melrose bar, this tribute to Parisian baking, delicious cocktails and fine dining has found a home on the Red Mile.
Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roasters at Simmons Building
Where: 618 Confluence Way SE
The newest addition to the Phil & Sebastian family, the Simmons Building location is a collaboration with other local businesses Charbar and Sidewalk Citizen Bakery to create a communal hub for great food and drinks. The open concept encourages movement and activity while the menu offers up specialty drinks like the Almond Fresco unique to this location.
Rosso Coffee Roasters
Where: Victoria Park Arriva Tower, 425 11th Ave. SE; Ramsay Dominion Bridge, 804 24th Ave. SE; Stephen Avenue Telus Convention Centre, 140 8th Ave. SE
Known for their locally roasted beans, Rosso Coffee Roasters was a coffee pioneer in Calgary when they first opened their doors. Now with multiple locations throughout the inner city as well as many pop-up locations, their coffee is a favourite among Calgarians.
Café Gravity
Where: 909 10th St. SE
Nestled in the heart of Inglewood, Café Gravity is the perfect place to grab a delicious lunch and a great cup of coffee. With a revolving gallery of local artists, live music and a strong dedication to supporting the community, Gravity has become a mainstay for the neighbourhood.
Monogram Café
Where: 4814 16th St. SW
Opened up by three award-winning baristas, Monogram Café has quickly become a local favourite among coffee lovers. Located in Altadore, the café is a tiny unassuming joint that packs a big punch with their incredible coffee and pastries.
Caffe Beano
Where: 1613 9th St. SW
Beano has long since been a go-to for Calgarians. Located just off of the busy 17th Avenue strip, it is where students, creatives and more go for their daily caffeine fix. Another great spot for people watching, be sure to grab a cup of coffee and pull up a bench for a day in the sun.
