Since 2014, IKEA has been working with contemporary artists from around to the world to create one-of-a-kind art pieces that will breathe life into anyone’s home. This year, using eight international creative forces, they’ve curated a short-term rug collection that brings bold tapestry art to the masses. NextHome takes a closer look at this exclusive art event hitting select stores May 4, 2019.

Who: Virgil Abloh, Men’s Artistic Director at Louis Vuitton and the founder of fashion brand, Off-White.

What: He created a rug with an ironic take on overbearing parents who protect their furniture at nearly any cost. The written quote and traditional motif was intended to turn a Persian rug on its head.

Who:The duo behind Chiaozza (Adam Frezza and Terry Chiao) works a range of media including painted sculpture, installation, collage and photography. They founded their New York City studio in 2011.

What: They were inspired by spring-time scenes in the deserts of the American South West. The playful coloured blocks, squiggles, daubs and dots found on this rug are an invitation for people to sprawl out and play.

Who: Craig Green is one of the UK’s most innovative menswear designers.

What: With this rug, he was interested in exploring the idea of escaping reality to somewhere better, like paradise.

Who: Misaki Kawai is a Japanese artist known for her installations made out of papier-mâché, wood, fabric and other low-tech craft materials.

What: She believes art should be fun! She was inspired by all things fun and goofy when creating her whimsical rug.

Who: Seulgi Lee is a French-Korean artist

What: Her rug embodies the expression, “happy as a fish in water.” She wanted to bring the light of water inside and the power of colour to her dhurrie.

Who: Noah Lyon is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Brooklyn with works featured in museums around the world.

What: His rug is inspired by the Navajo whirling log and depicts our interconnected lives.

Who: Filip Pagowski is a graphic artist based in Warsaw, Poland.

What: The idea behind his rug was the concept of weaving, with the image reflecting the mechanics of using yarn to build a rug.

Who: Supakitch is a French artist whose eclectic approach mixes different techniques such as acrylic paint, resin, gold leaf and tattoo.

What: His take on the classic animal rug. Using a snake design, he creates an interesting and unexpected floor design.
