No casinos or condos for Ontario Place

The Ontario government is conducting an international search for private sector partners who can come up with “transformational ideas” for Ontario Place.

“Our government promised to move quickly to bring Ontario Place back to life and we are delivering on that promise,” said Michael Tibollo, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport in April. “We are inviting partners from around the world to submit their designs and ideas for a reimagined Ontario Place.” The plans need to be “financially viable” from partners who have the “experience and capacity to design, implement and operate their development on the site” but no residential developments or casinos will be considered he said.

“I want to be clear, our vision for Ontario Place does not include residential developments or casinos,” said Tibollo. “Once again, I want to repeat that our vision will not have casinos or condos included as part of the Ontario Place site.”

The minister was joined by Monte McNaughton, the Minister of Infrastructure, who added that they are looking at a visionary path for Ontario Place. “We are looking for big, bold ideas,” he said.

The call for development follows the government’s invitation in January to interested parties to submit their ideas early. Submissions need to reflect the province’s vision for the site as a “spectacular destination that could include sport and entertainment landmarks, public spaces and parks, recreational facilities, as well as retail.”

“The former government ignored this gem and let it deteriorate for far too long,” said Tibollo. “We have a real opportunity here to unlock the great potential of Ontario Place as a year-round, world-class destination that can attract visitors from Canada and abroad, as well as Ontarians.”

Ontario Place opened in 1971 and was originally developed to promote Ontario that featured exhibits and entertainment promoting the province. Over the years, the venue became known as more of a theme park for families, with a water park, a children’s play area, and amusement rides. After a decline in attendance, the government of Ontario closed the facility except for its music venue and marina after the 2011 season.

“Our government promised to move quickly to bring Ontario Place back to life and we are delivering on that promise,” said Tibollo.
