Ottawa's oldest house: Bayne House

By Lindsay Foran
October 05, 2014

The stone home was built in 1828 by Corporal William Ross who was in Ottawa working on the construction of the Rideau Canal. Corporal Ross went on to be one of the most successful dairy farmers in Ottawa and his home still stands today as a symbol of wealth, hard work and success.

Fuller St. is located in the affluent Civic Hospital area. Even with a street full of remarkable homes, 40 Fuller is, by far, the most prominent. Now inhabited by Grete Hale, the home has two large expansions, including a garage. But the original stone home stands strong.

Hale opens her home to the public every September as part of the Ottawa West House Tour to raise money for the Stroke Survivors Association of Ottawa. This would be a great opportunity to check out the inside of this remarkable home.

The Bayne House, located at 40 Fuller St, is arguably Ottawa's oldest house
