Like many neighbourhoods in Edmonton, Allendale was built up during the post-World War II development period. This square-shaped neighbourhood is based on a simple grid pattern, with a park in the centre. Allendale’s east-west boundaries are marked by 104 Street (Calgary Trail) and 109 Street, and north-south from 70 Avenue to 61 Avenue.
Most of the residences in Allendale are single-family homes. The area is attractive for its convenient access to the University of Alberta and Calgary Trail/Gateway Boulevard. The community is close to lots of shopping, with trendy Whyte Avenue not very far to the north and Southgate Centre to the south.
Allendale is a quiet neighbourhood with old, mature trees and scenic parks ideal for walking. Residents are a younger-than-average crowd and most are single or young couples, which brings a youthful energy to the community. The proximity to the university and Whyte Avenue makes it ideal for students and young adults.
Nearly half the population of Allendale is in their 20s or early 30s, making this neighbourhood a community on the rise. Despite being dominated by single-family dwellings, most of the homes are rented out as the area is an inexpensive option for students or young professionals early in their careers. Almost half of the residents have moved into Allendale in the past five years according 2011 census data.
People in Allendale love the easy-to-access amenities – from the nearby shopping along Whyte Avenue or Southgate Centre to the Rollie Miles Athletic Field and Scona Pool, which are conveniently located next door to one another. Allendale is also close to the University of Alberta, the university hospital, and the Stollery Children’s Hospital.
Most people in Allendale drive to work or school, however the area's central location and proximity to downtown means that public transit is easily accessible. Major bus routes flow along 109 Street and 106 Street. The closest LRT station is at Southgate Centre or the South Campus LRT station. 109 Street and the Calgary Trail Gateway Boulevard corridor provide major roadways north and south and to the university.
Like most of the older neighbourhoods in the area, Allendale has many single detached homes that were built pre-1960. While a few sites have been upgraded, many of the homes are still coping with age and may need improvement. The traffic along 109 Street and 104 Street can get noisy, and many rely on 106 Street to cut through the neighbourhood, making it a busy road.
Given that most Allendale residents are young, the amount of disposable income is less than it is in more affluent neighbourhoods. According to the 2014 Statistics Canada census data, the average household income is below the city average, but a third of the adult population have a university degree, which could demonstrate residents' promising potential and Allendale's upwardly-mobile future.
