Laval-des-Rapides is one of the busier, central parts of Laval. It is best known for being the home of the University of Montreal’s Laval campus. It’s bordered to the north and to the west by Chomedey, on the eastern side, by Pont-Viau. To the south Laval-des-Rapides is bordered by the Rivière-des-Prairies.
You’ll find a little bit of everything in Laval-des-Rapides, including quiet residential streets and small businesses, as well as large shopping malls like Quartier Laval, and large campuses such as the University of Montreal’s Laval campus and Collège Montmorency, and Laval’s only metro stations. It’s like a city within a larger city.
Because Laval-des-Rapides is so diverse, it has many different vibes depending on which street you happen to wander on. Walking down Cartier Boulevard, you’d think this neighbourhood was residential and suburban, but on Boulevard de la Concorde, the neighbourhood gives off busy city vibes with the larger businesses and education facilities.
You’ll find a variety of different demographics in the Laval-des-Rapides area. Because of the cégep and the university in the area, you’ll find many younger people living on their own, or with a roommate. You will also find a handful of people in their thirties. About 40 per cent of all households include families with children.
As mentioned, you’ve got a bit of everything in Laval-des-Rapides. You can find anything from mom and pop shops to larger franchises and chain stores at Quartier Laval. The Laval campus of the University of Montreal is located in the northern part of the area, across from Collège Montmorency. There are also many parks, including Parc des Prairies.
Residents in Laval-des-Rapides are lucky to have easy access to the Montreal metro system, which provide easy access to Montreal. There are three metro stops in the area, one of which (Montmorency) is located by the university. Residents can also easily use Highway 15, which connects with Montreal and the Laurentians.
With its education facilities, shopping and residential feel, Laval-des-Rapides is a city within the larger city of Laval. You will find grocery stores, and smaller mom and pop shops. Residents have easy access to the rest of Laval, as well as to Montreal, especially because of the underground metro stops.
Laval-des-Rapides is not a particularly expensive place to live. On the quieter streets, there are a few mom and pop shops, as well as fast food type places like La Belle Province. The shops at Quartier Laval are not high-end stores, but there is a Starbucks. For big spending, residents will head to the nearby Carrefour Laval.
