Design Haus design competition fof condo by Shiu PongCondo developer Shiu Pong Group of Companies is calling all aspiring architects and designers to the drawing board in a competition for the soon-to-be-built, appropriately named Design Haus condominium. The contest, which is tasking students to help design the perfect urban suite, was the brainchild of Henry Hung, president of Shiu Pong, the developer behind the project, coming soon to College just east of Spadina.

“The Design Haus location is surrounded by university and college influences, therefore, who better to help us with lifestyle designs than architectural and design students who can creatively address the benefits of this urban neighbourhood,” says Hung.

The task is to design one of two apartments (approximately 500 and 900 sq. ft.) according to the outlined specifications. This competition is open to any student enrolled in a North American college or university at time of submission.

Up for grabs are three cash prices of $10,000, $5,000 and $3,000, and bragging rights.

“We believe that this contest will generate tremendous interest within the student community,” says Clifford Korman, founding partner at KirKor Architects, the designers of the 17-storey building boasting 116 condo suites and 26 rental units located in close proximity to the University of Toronto, OCAD University, Ryerson University and George Brown.

Those who are interested still have time to throw their hat into the ring – though not much, with a submission deadline of January 15. Judging will be made by a panel of leading industry professionals and faculty members:

Entries will be judged by a panel of leading industry professionals including Clifford Korman (principal, KirKor Architects) and Kelly Cray (principal, Union31), and faculty members including David Lieberman (associate professor at the University of Toronto), Colleen Reid (associate dean, Faculty of Design at OCAD University), Filiz Klassen (associate chair, School of Interior Design at Ryerson University), and Pietro Ferrari (School of Architectural Studies, George Brown College).

Entries in the competition will be judged on efficient space use, visual appeal, creativity, the elements and principles of design.
