Discover Walden in southeast Calgary

“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.” – Henry David Thoreau, Walden (1854).

Walden is a book written by Thoreau while he lived in solitude in a small cabin surrounded by nature from 1845 to 1847. In his writing, he explored self-discovery, minimalism, self-reliance, and harmony with the natural environment. His philosophy has been influential in political and environmental movements around the world.

Now, 160 years later, inspired by Thoreau’s “Walden’s Pond”, construction commenced on a new community in Southeast Calgary. The neighbourhood of Walden is bordered by the Bow River Valley to the east, designed with greenspaces, bike friendly pathways, traffic calming road design, and a broad array of home styles that offer Calgarians a personal private oasis.

Here you’ll find a well-established new community that gives you the best of both worlds. You’ll have the convenience of connectivity with great access to major transit corridors, and a home that is outside the hustle and bustle of Calgary’s core. Enjoy a tranquil neighbourhood greenspace, prairie sky views, easy access to the mountains, while residing in a lively neighbourhood with amenities and services located a short walk from your home.

Sustainable Design

Walden was the first community to attain all 11 of the City of Calgary’s sustainability principles. The community was built with forward-thinking design that includes natural space as an integral part of the community, not as an afterthought. Enjoy pathways shadowed by mature preserved trees, a naturalized wetland, a clear-water pond, and trail systems that connect Walden to Fish Creek Park.

The Essentials are Covered

Walden Gate Village has groceries, fast food, retail and Walden Landing which offers professional and medical services. Just north of Walden are the amenities in Lake Chaparral and further north, the Shawnessy Town Centre. The rest of Calgary is accessible via the MacLeod Trail, and Okotoks is a short drive south.

In a few years, Walden will also have prime access to a large new retail and business hub called Township, located at 210th Ave and MacLeod trail. Scheduled to open its first phase in 2021, Township will become a 1.5 million sq.-ft. mixed-used development on 10 acres of land with commercial space, retail, grocery, fashion, restaurants, offices, medical facilities, and hotels.

Family Friendly

There are two new school sites planned in Walden, and a long list of great schools that kids can attend in nearby communities until the new schools are ready. Walden is a paradise for raising kids to love the outdoors with two kilometres of pathways, creative play areas for kids, basketball courts, a baseball diamond, fishing on the Bow, and a short drive from Spruce Meadows and Granary Road.

Getting Around

If you need to commute downtown, you’ll have about a 30- to 40-minute drive from your home with the MacLeod Trail easily accessible. Commuting by transit is simple with three bus routes running in the neighbourhood and close access to the southeast leg of the LTR Red Line at Somerset – Bridlewood station. A commute downtown from Walden will take approximately 50 to 60 minutes, giving you plenty of time to read that book you’ve been meaning to finish.

A Home for Everyone

There is a broad range of home types available in Walden, with options to fit any budget and style preference. Choose from condos, townhomes, duplexes, laned homes, front garages, bungalow villas, and estate homes. You’ll be in good hands with Calgary’s most renowned builders building in Walden, including Arcuri Homes, Avi Urban, Axis Homes, Baywest Homes, California Custom Home Builders, Cardel Homes, Cardel Lifestyles, Daytona Homes, Excel Homes, Homes by Avi, Homes by Us, and Prominent Homes.
