Edmonton's 2026 trends in home innovation

The search for a better home has been a constant pursuit. Home design innovation has led to dramatic improvements in the way we live. The second-floor laundry room, the walk-through pantry, even the half bath on the main floor – everyday items that we now see in today’s homes - all have been products of home design innovation through the years.

Now, homebuilders have introduced new concepts like the flex room that provides work-from-home flexibility, the main floor bedroom to accommodate aging parents, and “smart” features that provide a level of convenience that was unthinkable even 10 years ago.

Improving the way people live through better home design is the goal of every homebuilder, and it’s not just tweaks to floorplans. It can be through the introduction of new materials, home automation features, or including former upgrade features as part of the standard builder package.

Here are what other home design innovations Edmonton’s builders are offering in 2026.

Lifestyle-centric designs

Cantiro has always pushed boundaries by introducing new home designs tailored to evolving lifestyles, affordability, and modern buyer expectations. The goal has ever been to offer a diverse range of homes that meets buyers’ needs in every stage of life.

“Innovation at Cantiro is both market‑led and deeply ingrained in who we are. We’re committed to finding better ways to design homes and deliver an exceptional experience for every homeowner.,” says Gary Hoeft, GM of Cantiro Homes.

“Customer insight continues to guide how we evolve our personalization offerings. While curated interior styles work well for many homeowners, others wanted greater flexibility to mix-and-match colours and finishes from our range of interior style packages. That demand shaped the creation of our Blend option.”

This year, buyers will see design innovation that makes building easier to personalize with confidence, he adds. “First: Timber, our newest interior style, brings a warm-neutral, nature-inspired look with slim shaker cabinetry and brushed nickel details: designed for a timeless, refined feel.

“Second: our personalization pathway – Blend, Define, and Enhance – helps future homeowners choose how far they want to go, from mixing finishes across interior styles, to layout adjustments, to an elevated, design-centre-led experience with an interior designer to review upgraded inclusions.”

Beyond home design, Cantiro has also integrated AI-driven tools into their website and customer service processes. These advancements, like their translation tool, improving accessibility for 6+ languages, will help homebuyers navigate their options with ease while providing existing homeowners with better resources and support for their Cantiro home.

“We believe a well-designed home should already include the features homeowners want most,” Hoeft says. “That’s why we build modern, stylish, and functional spaces that include high-quality finishes.”

Smarter, more sustainable homes

Jayman BUILT has spearheaded the efforts in Alberta to create the smartest and most sustainably designed homes, and their latest introduction of the “smart wall” system raises their standards to another level.

Jayman BUILT opened 2026 with the launch of its new Quantum Performance Wall System Powered by BTRboard™, a residential wall assembly designed to improve energy efficiency, comfort and overall home performance.

Exclusively available on Jayman single-family homes, the wall system is being introduced alongside Jayman Complete Homes, an enhanced standard home offering now included in every newly built Jayman home.

Designed with homeowners in mind, the Quantum Performance Wall System integrates BTRboard™ technology to improve insulation, thermal performance and overall comfort, helping reduce heating and cooling costs by up to 20 per cent.

“I am very excited to announce our commitment to BTRboard on every home we build,” says Jay Westman, Chairman & CEO of Jayman BUILT. “BTRboard is a revolutionary new exterior wall panel adding an extra R8 of insulation value to the complete exterior walls of your home. Made of fire-resistant rigid foam, this product increases R-Value by 41 per cent, lowers thermal bridging, and reduces outside noise by 26 per cent, we call this the Quantum Performance Wall System Powered by BTRboard.”

Each Jayman home already comes with their Quantum Performance package –a set of standard, energy efficient inclusions like eight solar panels, tankless hot water heater, high efficiency furnace, triple pane windows, and more. Having this new wall system just makes their homes more functional, sustainable and innovative. For more information, visit jayman.com.

Blending affordability with lifestyle

Keeping costs down is still part of Cantiro’s approach, and making innovation work requires balance.

“We balance innovation with affordability by innovating in scale” Hoeft says. “With our new Bungalow Collection, we’re delivering homes with a smaller footprint without compromising the options and finishes homeowners care about.”

Importantly, these homes don’t feel stripped down. Buyers still have access to the same personalization pathways, and finish quality found in Cantiro’sLife Collection, including curated interior styles. Where the innovation really stands out is in the value built into the price. As part of the Bungalow Collection they have Bungalow townhomes which include a double detached garage, full landscaping, and fencing. Including the common add-ons provides buyers with clearer upfront pricing and peace of mind. This approach reflects Cantiro’s focus on making the buying experience simpler and more confident.

By pairing a smaller, more efficient footprint with the design standards and flexibility Cantiro is known for, the Bungalow Collection reflects how Cantiro is responding to evolving buyer needs, making high‑quality, well‑designed homes more accessible without compromising on experience or craftsmanship.

To help buyers visualize what’s possible, Hoeft invites them to visit Cantiro’s Riverside bungalow townhome show home (309 Rankin Drive). Go to cantiro.ca/homesto learn more.
