Feature | A night of firsts – Edmonton’s Awards of Excellence in Housing online event is a hit!

It may have been a stripped-down event without the usual glitz, but the 2020 Awards of Excellence in Housing will still go down as one of its most historic. It was the first time that the Canadian Home Builders’ Association.

– Edmonton Region held the annual AOE event celebrating its best and brightest online.

Coined “AOE: Live! The Roaring Twenties” the livestream event on May 21 got more than 2,000 views, exceeding CHBA-ER’s expectations. Winners of the 58 individual categories that were up for grabs, included Milestone Builder Group for Builder of the Year – Large Volume; Kanvi Homes for Builder of the Year- Small Volume; and Carrington Communities for Builder of the Year-Multi-Family.
“As disappointed as we were to have to cancel the Awards Gala, I thought all those involved in converting the Live program to a Live Streaming program all did an admirable job,” says Marie Soprovich, CHBA-ER President and founding partner of Aquarian Restorations.

“Kudos really need to go to the committee who put many hours into creating for the original show and then the work of converting what we could into an interesting and lively event that we could watch with our coworkers and families depending where we were on May 21st!” she tells Edmonton New Home + Condo Guide. “It was a brilliant solution to a challenging situation.”

Laura Bruno, CEO of CHBA-ER, agrees. “We were so pleased to receive wonderful feedback from members about the livestream. Everyone was thrilled to have some good news in these challenging times,” she says.
Bruno adds that the annual Awards of Excellence event allows them to not only recognize outstanding members but also creates a venue for members to connect, and even more so this year. “Watching members connect with each other during the livestream and cheer one another on was so great to see. Member companies also got creative and found innovative ways to celebrate together with different kinds of online watch parties.”
Courtney Provencal, of Carrington Communities, says holding the gala awards online did not diminish one bit what winning the award means.

“We are thrilled to have been named the 2020 Multi-Family Builder of the Year at the annual CHBA-ER Region Awards of Excellence in Housing. This is the fifth time overall and third year in a row to have received this honor, it is a true testament to the superior quality and customer service we strive to offer our customers as Edmonton’s local condo builder for 45 years,” she says.

She also complemented the organizers for their ability to quickly pivot and adapt to the situation. “We thought that awards were very well done and thank CHBA-ER for evolving quickly to put on the virtual awards for their members.”

Miles Kohan, president and CEO of Milestone Group of Companies, agrees that the online event was a smash. And it was doubly exciting win for him, as it was the first time that Milestone Group of Companies has won the award.

Kohan says that his other companies that now comprise Milestone – Marcson Homes and Park Royal Homes – had already won their fair share of awards (Marcson Homes won Builder of the Year in 2019, and Park Royal boasts 11 customer service awards). Milestone’s win this year completes a hat trick of sorts. “AOE Live! was a great event and this win makes it that more memorable for us,” he says.
