Groundbreaking of Wonder Condos a glimpse of the past

Construction at Leslieville’s new landmark address, Wonder Condos, is now underway after a commemorative ground-breaking ceremony last month. Once home to the Weston Bread Factory at the corner of Eastern and Logan Avenues, the building will undergo one of Toronto’s largest structural heritage preservations, converting and adapting the existing form into new residences, hard lofts and commercial space within Wonder – an eight-storey residential condominium.

The groundbreaking comes on the heels of the 2019 BILD awards, where Wonder took home the award for the best mid-rise building design.

“Wonder isn’t just a nod to the history of this building, but a testament to its future. It’s an optimistic word that encourages you to imagine all the possibilities,” says Graywood president and CEO Stephen Price. “When you look at the near-term future of Leslieville, the new transit that is planned, the promise of the Unilever site, the new automotive innovation hub and Netflix Studios that are coming, you foresee a community that is poised to rival any other in the city and the country."

Graywood, Alterra and the design team worked with the city’s Heritage Preservation Services to ensure the appropriate conservation of this historic property during its conversion, considering everything from window size and programming to the new materials being introduced. “Wonder is a strong example of just how much can be accomplished with an adaptive, re-use project,” says Alterra president and CEO, Robert Cooper. “This transformation will ensure a Leslieville landmark remains a part of the local fabric for decades to come.”

This heritage element affords unique features and amenities for residents, from the gym to the co-working lounge and the multipurpose family room. The convivial co-working lounge on the ground floor is designed to speak to the many creatives, makers and entrepreneurs in Leslieville offering a space for residents to meet and collaborate.

With Queen Street East’s distinct blend of urban amenities and small-town feel, Wonder residents will also have access to everything that makes the area so desirable, while also benefiting from the innovative new plans that are slated to surround this east Toronto location.

Due to Wonder’s phenomenal success, the Wonder presentation centre is now closed – however, a limited number of suites, including heritage lofts, are still available. For more information visit wondercondos.com or call 416.628.9601.
