There is a new energy coursing through Edmonton’s southeast. New propspects, new opportunities, new growth and new homebuyers who see plenty of options to find an affordable, comfortable lifestyle in the new communities coming up in this quadrant.

In these days when the rest of the country is looking to Alberta for affordable housing opportunities – especially in Edmonton – this sector of the capital region is certainly drawing its fair share of interest.

The southeast is generally the area south of Whitemud Drive and east of Highway 2, but much of the new growth can be found straddling Anthony Henday Drive. The southeast does include the older, more mature areas including Mill Woods, but most of the new communities are further along the southern edges of the city.

Communities that promote a healthy life-work balance is the norm in these new areas, with commercial, retail and recreational spots found in abundance and residents don’t have to go far to find what they want and need.

The new southeast

Southeast Edmonton is a widely diverse mix of residential, industrial, and rural areas, plus recreational green spaces such as Mill Creek Ravine that provide residents with a rare closeness to nature in an urban setting.

The southeast is also home to large shopping complexes like South Edmonton Common, a spacious open-air mall with big-brand stores, a cinema, and fast-food. A scattering of hip breweries and fastfood diners and fine dining estagblisments have made it a favourite foodie destination.

International flavour

There is an international flavour throughout as you don’t have to go very far to try out some of the best Punjabi, Jamaican or Filipino food (and more) in Edmonton. Bombay Street Tadka Indian Restaurant is a favourite, Emilio’s Inasal offers Filipino-style barbecue, and Irie Foods serves traditional jerk chicken and other Caribbean specialties.

South Edmonton Common is a popular shopping destination, comprising a sprawling mix of big brand stores (including IKEA), restaurants, and services. When complete, it will spread over 320 acres and contain some 2,300 square-feet of retail space, making it the largest ope-air retail development in North America. The shopping centre can be accessed through Gateway Boulvard or Parsons Road SW.

While the Mill Woods Recreation Centre offers endless fun and fitness for the whole family. It has a 45-metre swimming pool with waves, a dive tank, two NHL-sized arenas, tennis courts, runnig tracks and fitness amenities that the community needs. It is at 7202 28 Avenue NW.

New communities with style

With such an appealing array of lifestyle amenities, no wonder new communities have come up fast and furious in southeast Edmonton. Qualico Communities has Aster and Laurel Crossing; Anthem offers Walker Summit; Dream Developments has Maple Crest and Laurel Green; and Hills at Charlesworth from Cantiro are among some of the most popular new communities in the area, maybe in the whole city.

Qualico Communities’ Laurel Crossing is minutes away from everything a family needs, including shopping, schools, health care, recreation facilities and public transportation, with easy access to Anthony Henday Drive. The K-9 Svend Hansen school is located within the community and its scenic ponds and green spaces provide calm enjoyment for residents. It is also only 10 minutes away from the Grey Nuns Community Hospital that provides added peace of mind. Rear Laned and Front Drive Single Family homes are available, as are Duplexes and Executive style homes.

The beautiful community of Walker Summit is located in southeast Edmonton. Situated south of Ellerslie Road, this coveted neighbourhood provides easy access to Anthony Henday, Queen Elizabeth Highway (QEII), and 50th Street. Walker Summit provides the perfect option for those looking for a new home that offers quick access to the city while also craving a slowed down pace of life.
