The southwest sector of Edmonton can be characterized in a couple of ways – one, as a booming, cosmopolitan mini-city with tons of growth potential, and the other as a nature-connected enclave that offers the peace and tranquility of the quiet countryside.

But what it is ultimately is a welcoming community where families can set down roots, with a multitude of opportunities for homebuyers to find their forever home.

The new communities of the southwest take up the biggest space in the map sections of this magazine with 38 various residential developments spanning two pages. Every other sector in the Edmonton area only has one page, some just half.

Every type of housing option in every budget is readily available here, from apartment condos, to townhomes, to luxurious estate family homes. Almost all of Edmonton’s most recognizable builders and developers have a presence here, and some of the most active are Cantiro, Rohit Land Development, and Qualico Communities.

Cantiro (formerly Beaverbrook Communities and Dolce Vita Homes) active projects include ONE at Keswick, Cantiro Townhomes at ONE at Keswick, and The Drive in Windermere. Qualico Communities has Crimson at Creekwood Chapelle, Langdale in Windermere, and Point at Glenridding Ravine. While Rohit Land Developments has Arbours of Keswick and Ridgecrest at Glenridding Ravine.

Kim Tieu, Senior Marketing Manager at Cantiro, says having such a wide variety of homes to choose from is key in the Southwest’s appeal. “This allows individuals to move up as they move forward with their families and careers while still staying in the same area of the city.”

Commercial core

The energy is palpable in the Southwest, especially along the popular Currents of Windermere commercial centre, where new retail shops, restaurants and services are going up fast.

Just off Anthony Henday and Terwillegar Drive, Currents of Windermere is SW Edmonton’s finest new shopping centre destination, featuring quality retailers, convenient services, entertainment and convenient and delicious dining options. It features many new-to-market concepts, defining it as a unique shopping destination.

Cabela’s is one of its anchor stores and is a big presence in the complex – a must for many outdoor enthusiasts. Restaurants and diners or every flavour are within, like Barcelos – the home of flame-grilled chicken, or Burger Village which specializes in organic fastfood menu.

There are many excellent restaurants and diners in the immediate vicinity too, like XIX Nineteen that brings contemporary tastes to traditional favourites, Buco Pizzeria & Vino Bar that specializes in fresh, modern Italian entrées, grilled dishes, desserts, and napoletana pizza.

The great outdoors

If you’re a golfer, the southwest may just be the best community as the popular Jagare Ridge Golf Club, River Ridge Golf & Country Club and the Windermere Golf & Country Club are within its borders. But that isn’t the only outdoor activity one can enjoy in the southwest.

There are plenty of outdoor recreational opportunities around. It is in fact promoted by many of the land developers here as among the area’s greatest assets. Whitemud Creek runs through the southwest and affords plenty of quiet, idyllic scenery for calm walks, jogging or biking.

“The connectivity to walking trails, dog parks and the river valley is some of best you’ll find in Edmonton.,” Tieu says.
The seven-acre Gordon King Pond in the Arbours of Keswick neighbourhood has become an escape to nature for many residents. Marty Pawlina, Marketing Manager at Rohit Land, says the community has the goods to enjoy a complete, modern lifestyle.

“The Arbours of Keswick have a big commercial area just at the entrance to the community, which will have a grocery anchor store, shopping and employment opportunities for residents.”

Their other southwest community, Ridgecrest at Glenridding Ravine, backs onto Whitemud Creek Ravine, and there will be beautiful homes on the ridge that overlook stunning sceneries. Everyone in the community will have access to walking paths that lead through this wonderful natural landscape and storm ponds.

Choices galore

Cantiro offers the most exclusive address in the southwest in The Drive in Windermere, which boasts some of the most luxurious estate homes with a scenic setting. It’s been really popular, with only four lots that can fit estate homes with as much as a four-car garage.

Cantiro’s ONE at Keswick has also attracted a lot of attention with its diverse array of homes and amenities. It has two new K-9 schools, 19+ kilometres of pathways and has sustainability as a big part of their development. “It has been one of the most popular areas to call home in Southwest Edmonton,” she says.

Qualico Communities’ Crimson in Creekwood Chappelle is just as popular. It is conveniently located just off 41 Avenue Southwest and Chappelle Way, in booming Southwest Edmonton. Everything needed to enjoy residential life is just minutes away, including schools, shopping, recreation, and medical services.

And its Langdale in Windmere has a location close to urban amenities but has retained its natural surroundings. The community has its own urban forest, along with ponds, paths and parks. Its unique design incorporates charming old-English touches such as cobblestone paths and traditional streetlights.
