The small community of Adelaide Churchill is an urban oasis on Saskatoon’s east side. Mostly residential, the neighbourhood features plenty of parks and trees. However, it’s also close to major commuter roads and a large commercial centre. It’s bordered in the north by Taylor Street, in the east and west by Clarence Avenue South and Cumberland Avenue South, and in the south by Circle Drive.
Originally two separate developments, the northern section (established circa 1910) and southern section (established circa 1960) amalgamated in the 1990s. Looking on a map, it’s easy to see the physical divisions in the neighbourhood – but these don't extend into the atmosphere. With several parks, two elementary schools, and a couple of established churches, Adelaide Churchill has become a strong, united community.
The east side of Saskatoon is desirable, and homes in Adelaide Churchill are priced accordingly. There are few rental properties – mostly houses or basement suites. According to the Canadian Mortgage Housing Corporation, in 2013 Saskatoon’s average rent was $827 for a one-bedroom apartment and $1,020 for a two-bedroom, which is high for the area. Transportation costs above average. Coffee is less – about $2 each from the convenience store.
While the neighbourhood’s boundaries are active commuter roads, the interior streets are relatively quiet and relaxed. In the southern end, the sound walls protect residents from the noise of Circle Drive. In addition, Adelaide Churchill’s atmosphere is safe and relaxed for children and older adults. The Market Mall and Stonegate Shopping Centre are close by, yet not directly within community borders – reducing the level of activity in the area.
It’s easy to get around this small community using Clarence Avenue or Taylor Street. An interchange from Clarence Avenue provides easy access to Circle Drive, Saskatoon’s main commuter road. Not only that, but city bus service runs through the area, connecting to the University of Saskatchewan and the downtown bus mall. If you’re heading out of town, it’s only 15.6 kilometres to the John Diefenbaker International Airport.
Residents love the neighbourhood’s two schools, Hugh Cairns V.C. Elementary School and St. Philip Elementary School. In addition to their regular curriculum, Hugh Cairns focuses on arts and technology, and St. Philip offers a deaf and hard-of-hearing program. There are also two high schools just outside community boundaries, Aden Bowman Collegiate and Holy Cross High School. Royal University Hospital is also close by, just 10 minutes via Clarence Avenue.
According to a 2014 municipal profile, English is the first language of the majority of residents in this community. The estimated population is 3,447, and the average age range is mid-40s to mid-50s. The area is popular with families, with most households consisting of two or more people. There are some single people, and some older couples.
Adelaide Churchill offers a laid-back vibe common to established neighbourhoods. In the north, many of the homes were built around 1910, while the southern half reveals 1960s-era construction. Lots are large, and the three parks – Meadowlark Park, Adelaide Park, and Churchill Park – are great places to host family picnics or take a walk on a summer evening. The Churchill Shopping Centre is a short distance away.
