Downtown Aurora

Aurora

Introduction

Aurora’s historic downtown, also known as “Aurora Village,” is a buzzing neighbourhood bordered by Yonge Street to the east and Industrial Parkway North to the to the west. It's southern border is Industrial Parkway South and the northern boundary is slightly north of St. John’s Sideroad. While the area is undergoing vast development, it has still managed to hang tight to its small-town feel.

Lifestyle

Downtown Aurora features all the traits that a resident could possibly love about a neighbourhood. If you need a night out, there are quaint restaurants along the bustling Yonge and Wellington intersection; if you need some R&R, downtown Aurora features a large park and library; and, if you need some retail therapy, you can find both boutique shops and big box stores throughout the neighbourhood.

The Vibe

An upbeat neighbourhood within a quiet suburb, downtown Aurora offers the best of both worlds. A large number of the homes in the area were constructed prior to 1945, creating a distinctive small-town, historic feel to downtown Aurora. Fortunately, this look and feel has been largely sustained despite the area's recent revitalization.

Meet the Neighbours

Downtown Aurora's population is relatively varied; The area is a huge hit with families who are attracted to the low crime rates and wide variety of family-friendly amenities. But you'll also find seniors strolling the area and young couples who have entered the homeownership market, not wanting to venture too far from Toronto's downtown core.

In the Area

More than 45 businesses line the streets of Yonge and Wellington. The area is a great shopping destination and is home to a number of spas, salons and boutique shops. Big box stores are also nearby including Home Depot, Winners, Wal-Mart. The Aurora Town park is a family-favourite, and the library also attracts people to the area. The Cultural Centre is also a constant source of entertainment.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles

The neighbourhood is approximately 30 minutes from downtown Toronto. Residents have direct access to Highway 404, which connects to the 400, 401, and 407. Public transit options are available including the GO station providing trains and busses, York Region Transit and the VIVA bus that will connect residents to the surrounding GTA. Toronto Pearson International is a 45-minute drive from downtown Aurora.

The Good, the Bad & the Rest

Like many other suburbs, the city has taken a keen interest in establishing its downtown as the focal point for the greater area in hopes that it will attract more businesses, tourists and residents. This focus is to maintain the area's status as the heart of Aurora. However, the neighbourhood deviates from the rest of Aurora's quiet small-town vibe due to the heavy congestion along the Yonge and Wellington arteries.

Dollars & Sense

Like many other GTA suburbs, a large emphasis for Aurora city council has shifted toward the downtown area. In 2010, a plan called The Aurora Promenade, was developed which outlines the upcoming growth for downtown Aurora; 2,930 additional residents will reside along the Yonge and Wellington Street corridors. The rejuvenation of Aurora's downtown core, along with the big-box boom, was an early sign that Aurora was on the rise.
