Broadway

Winnipeg

Introduction

Broadway in Winnipeg’s downtown runs parallel to its famous big sister, pretty Portage Avenue, curving southwest to hold hands with her, then stopping suddenly in the east at Main Street. Broadway, like the name implies, sets the stage for many moving characters around a shuffling, busy and compelling inner-city backdrop.

Lifestyle

Life on Broadway is all-encompassing. A conflicting mix of contemporary art, social services and law offices, the prudent part is highly professional but all-knowing about the subculture of Canadian urban existence. This is why the tapestry changes from tattered but colourful on one end to straight and structured on the other.

Dollars & Sense

Broadway is a hit for those who live and work downtown. It is a necessity for some who need assistance and it requires cultural sensitivity from anyone with roots in the area. Professionals engage the business end while a younger, daring demographic steals the stage. There is a wide breadth of socio-economics going on.

The Good, the Bad & the Rest

Broadway is built for business and it has mainstream prices for a middle income bracket. It also employs those who need support, so the west end competes with smaller budgets in mind. There are extensive amenities and outlets, giving residents and visitors a lot of options. Services abound, as do niche businesses and health services

Planes, Trains & Automobiles

Traffic can be tangled with summer construction and merging streets. However, the flow is maintained through wide intersections, and many choose to walk, bus or bike downtown. Transit routes are popular and pedestrians are common in the business end and in Broadway West. The airport is fairly close to this area.

In the Area

Health services include a Centre for Natural Pain Solutions, Klinic Community Health and Four Rivers Medical Clinic. The park across from the Legislative grounds is large with fountains and flowers and there are numerous government structures along Broadway from the Legislative grounds and Law Courts to the Union Centre. It's busy and urban.

Meet the Neighbours

Broadway neighbours typically reside anywhere from Garry Street to Langside. Most are in their 20s and 30s, many of Aboriginal ancestry or another ethnic heritage. The majority of people are single, possibly with a business background or humanities education, making a modest income. Life here is compact and active so close to downtown, with professional lawyers and skateboarders alike.

The Vibe

Broadway opens with a thriving business area, intermingled with a bevy of slower passersby. On the east side, you’ll find every kind of professional from the many government offices. You’ll also see more than one squeegee kid, cyclists and Aboriginal art on the west. Winnipeg’s Golden Boy shines almost arabesque atop the largest prop, the Legislative building where tourists mingle and members of the assembly meet to discuss provincial policy.
