Google searches for Strawberry Fields might come up empty, as this crisp neighbourhood has now been renamed SouthFields Village, based on popular demand by its new residents and developers. This modern home subdivision lies enveloped within the expansive rural neighbourhood of Mayfield West, east of Kennedy Road, west of Learmont Avenue and north of Abbotside Way.
In keeping with the population density standards of the Ontario government and the village-feel of the Town of Caledon, SouthFields is a master-planned community that offers a perfect live, work and play lifestyle north of Mayfield Road, and was created by urban builders CosCorp and the Monarch Group. With a town centre at its nucleus, this residential pocket is home to parks, pathways, shops, and over 1,000 detached homes.
A family-friendly neighbourhood where kids are chaperoned by their parents to school and the area parks, sightings of dog walkers, bikers and hikers are frequent along the curvy streets, folks have access to unspoiled natural beauty within minutes, seniors indulge in leisurely strolls, hockey-moms meet at street corners to gossip, streetscapes are spacious, pedestrian-friendly and tree-lined.
SouthFields Villagers come from a mix of first and second generation South Asian, Canadian, Carribean, Latino and Filipino backgrounds. Residents are mostly young and growing single families and are actively involved in organizing entrepreneurial community activities such as the SouthFields Village Farmer’s Market where local growers sell their produce and the aim is to promote a “productive, organic, sustainable and socially responsible lifestyle,” according to the Caledon Enterprise.
The SouthFields Village Farmer’s Market is the biggest attraction of this area, apart from which the parkside pond is another area pull that converts itself into a skating rink in the winter months. Children hike to the resident SouthFields Village Public School, and the village organizes its traditional horse-drawn wagon rides during the holiday season. The area also has its own village publication - the SouthFields Village Voice.
Residents of SouthFields Village are heavily reliant on cars and it is not uncommon for families to own more than one car and for homes to have 2+ garages. While the neighbourhood is fairly walkable, there are no public transport options for folks to commute outside of the neighbourhood to places in the rest of the GTA. Horse-drawn wagons are a fun mode of recreational transport within the neighbourhood.
SouthFields Village was created to form a picture perfect urban village community that is self-sufficient, surrounded by country roads and corn fields, where children grow up with a green thumb and residents know each other’s first names. Residents display pride in ownership and young, upwardly mobile immigrant families are living the Canadian dream, albeit a few dozen extra kilometres away from big city Brampton life.
Detached homes are up for grabs at SouthFields Village starting at $400,000. Just by being in Caledon, life in general here is affordable and friendly to a middle-class pocket that allows for savings after all the bills are paid. Car insurances are low, but property taxes are at par with those in Brampton and Mississauga. Farmer’s markets make for cheaper grocery bills.
