NEIGHBOURHOOD

Mount Royal

Calgary

Introduction

Mount Royal is made up of two communities in central Calgary: the upscale homes in Upper Mount Royal, and the business and apartment complexes of Lower Mount Royal. The two are separated by an escarpment along Cameron and Royal avenues. The entire area stretches from trendy 17 Avenue SW to Council Way, and between 14 Street SW and Cliff Street in the east.

Lifestyle

Upper Mount Royal is one of the wealthiest neighbourhoods in Calgary. Large, luxury estates have been built along mature tree-lined streets. Down the escarpment in Lower Mount Royal, there are more upscale condos along with affordable apartments where many renters enjoy life close to downtown and all of the amenities.

The Vibe

The neighbourhood was once known as American Hill because it was home to the American business elite who lived there in the early 1900s. More than 100 years later, it still attracts an upper class demographic. Mount Royal's proximity to the downtown core and 17 Avenue’s trendy shops and restaurants makes it a convenient place to live.

Meet the Neighbours

Your neighbours in Mount Royal are dependent on which side of the escarpment you choose to live on. The affluent homes in Upper Mount Royal are more family oriented and residents are likely to frequent the exclusive Glencoe Club nearby. Down the escarpment in Lower Mount Royal, you will find more apartment blocks as renters and students love the proximity to transit, post-secondary education, and downtown entertainment.

In the Area

Residents have easy access to recreation around Mount Royal. There is the Glencoe Club, a private sports and social club, along with the Talisman Centre. Those who love the outdoors can enjoy Lindsay Park, South Calgary Park, or go for a jog along the Elbow River. Restaurants and shops are within a short walk along 17 Avenue. The downtown core is also just a short drive away.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles

Mount Royal is centrally located and is well served by Calgary transit, with several bus routes through the community. 17 Avenue provides quick access to downtown or for those heading west to the major commuter freeway of Crowchild Trail. To go north, 14 Street will take you across the Bow River to SAIT and the Jubilee Auditorium.

The Good, the Bad & the Rest

There is not much to dislike about Mount Royal as it has something for everyone. The biggest drawback for those wanting a single-family home in the area is the price. While luxury homes are out of the budgetary range of most Calgarians, there is more than likely a townhouse or condo that will suit your needs.

Dollars & Sense

As one of the wealthiest neighbourhoods – it’s not uncommon to find a private tennis court or swimming pool in the backyards of these homes – residents here enjoy the finer things in life. The fine dining and top fashion stores attract many locals to Mount Royal. Down the escarpment in Lower Mount Royal, there are more trendy boutiques and casual dining where anyone can enjoy a night out.
