NEIGHBOURHOOD

Scarboro

Calgary

Introduction

Located in the inner city of Southwest Calgary, the neighbourhood of Scarboro is one of Calgary’s oldest areas, first established in the early 1900s. Located just below 17th Avenue, this historic area offers residents quick access to the city via Crowchild Trail and quick and easy travel back and forth from downtown.

Lifestyle

Bordering 17th Avenue makes this a high pedestrian area with all the amenities you’d expect on a busy route; the take-away restaurants, dry cleaners and convenience stores. However, once you’re off the main roads, Scarboro is generally a low key residential neighbourhood with a good majority of restored character homes, expansive new builds, and lots of green space.

The Vibe

Considered to be an upper class neighbourhood, the Scarboro area is a popular place to live in Calgary. Its easy access to all the services associated with downtown living and the allure that comes with older residential areas, the Scarboro neighbourhood really offers the best of both worlds in real estate.

Meet the Neighbours

Made up of mostly detached homes, property in Scarboro doesn’t come cheap and here you’ll find people to be a mix of professionals with younger children and older couples who have probably lived in the area for decades. This area is ideal for people who want their kids walk to school, who enjoy having a tennis court nearby, not to mention a community centre for events with friends and family.

In the Area

This is a good neighbourhood for families. For anyone wanting to partake in the fun of dining out, shopping and nightlife, Uptown 17th Avenue is less than a 20-minute walk or a very inexpensive cab ride away. The only downside is the lack of a regular grocery store in the area.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles

From 17th Avenue you have a number of buses to catch at all hours and down the hill is the Sunalta C-Train, which gives residents the ability to commute to work in just minutes. Driving to the north and south sections of the city will find Crowchild Trail to make this drive quite expedient.

The Good, the Bad & the Rest

The historic streets, proximity to downtown and all its amenities make this area extremely popular with homeowners. Being perched on a hill not only presents a great view to the north but means the neighbourhood is at low risk for flooding; a concern for many home owners in inner city Calgary. While this area has many perks, there may be the odd experience with transient people passing through.

Dollars & Sense

As the saying goes, you get what you pay for. One of the more coveted areas of the city, Scarboro is a small community with above average housing prices, and very little in the affordable range for many people. There are few condos, apartments or duplexes in the Scarboro area.
