NEIGHBOURHOOD

West Springs

Calgary

Introduction

Located in the southwest quadrant of Calgary, West Springs became part of the city in 1995 when it was annexed. Development started in 2001, making this one of the city’s youngest communities. It is right at the city’s western edge and is bordered to the north by Old Banff Coach Road, in the south by Bow Trail, and in the east by 69th Street SW.

Lifestyle

This young, residential neighbourhood is ideal for those who love to get away to the Rockies or Kananaskis Country while remaining close to the city. Bow Trail makes for a short commute downtown, and there is plenty of shopping, restaurants, and professional services nearby. Residents here enjoy everything Calgary has to offer despite living at the city's western border.

The Vibe

West Springs is ideal for young families. There are plenty of parks and playgrounds for the kids to burn off excess energy, and the community hosts summer camps in addition to youth soccer and little league teams. There are several strip malls and shopping complexes with restaurants and all the major grocery chains in the neighbourhood that help enhance the area’s walkability.

Meet the Neighbours

The population of West Springs has grown each year as new development continues to take place. Many of those new people to the community are young families. According to the 2014 civic census, more than a third (36 per cent) of residents are under 19 years of age. The proximity to outdoor recreational opportunities attracts an active group who love to explore the natural parkland West Springs has to offer.

In the Area

A new elementary school opened in 2010 to accommodate the growing population of West Springs. A junior high and senior high school are also just to the south. West Springs residents enjoy their proximity to Canada Olympic Park and Edworthy Park for great outdoor recreation, from cycling and walking in the summer to skiing in the winter.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles

Most people who live in West Springs take advantage of Bow Trail to get downtown or link to Sarcee Trail to get to other parts of the city. The western section of the new ring road will take you to the northern and eastern parts of the city quickly. There are limited bus routes servicing the area and a C-Train stop at Canada Olympic Park.

The Good, the Bad & the Rest

In the short time West Springs has been around, it has developed quite quickly. Access to amenities like schools and professional services wasn’t the greatest at first, but that has improved and continues to do so with more development still underway. There is concern about the impact the new ring road will have on properties in the area when it is completed, but those effects are yet to be seen.

Dollars & Sense

The neighbourhood attracts more affluent Calgarians. There are higher priced restaurants and shopping in the area that target those with extra disposable income. However, the natural beauty and abundance of pathways provide recreational and relaxing options for any income level. Being a child-friendly neighbourhood, there are plenty of services and shopping aimed at young families as well.
