Bordered by Bow Trail in the north, 17 Avenue in the south, Sarcee Trail in the west, and 45 Street in the east, Westgate was first developed in the post-war era of the 1950s and remains a residential neighbourhood filled with single-family homes.

The residential neighbourhood of Westgate is a preferred destination for families looking to stay close to downtown and all the amenities it has to offer. The area was developed in the late ‘50s and is seeing a bit of revitalization with the introduction of new infill and rental options bringing in a diverse population.

The central location gives Westgate an urban feel with retail and restaurants only minutes away. However, the neighbourhood itself has many mature trees and quiet streets that give it a calm suburban atmosphere. Westgate has the best of both worlds, which is part of makes it so attractive for any age and any lifestyle.

Residents in Westgate represent Calgary’s recent surge in immigration and urbanization. There is a higher than average Chinese and Southeast Asian population and a mix of all ages and income levels. Single-family homes make up most of the housing units, which are attractive to the upwardly mobile young families looking to live close to shopping, restaurants, and other amenities.

In the Area

One of the biggest benefits of Westgate is its proximity to recreation, retail, and restaurants. The Beltline district lies just to the east and it includes the downtown core and 17 Avenue shopping areas. Closer to home, there’s Westbrook Mall, which is home to more than 70 businesses and services including a grocery store. Optimist Athletic Park is just south and is a hotspot for soccer, softball, lacrosse, and football.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles

The three main roads bordering Westgate are all major traffic corridors. Bow Trail and 17 Avenue provide easy access to downtown, while Sarcee Trail is a freeway that quickly connects Glenmore Trail and the Trans-Canada Highway. Public transportation is within walking distance of anywhere in Westgate. The 45 Street LRT station is located in the southeast corner and several bus routes run through the area.

The Good, the Bad & the Rest

This community is one of those targeted in the city’s new secondary suite proposal that would see single-family homes rezoned to allow for basement suites. While it would be a boon for renters and add density to low populated inner city areas, many residents oppose the plan for reasons ranging from added burden on infrastructure to increased traffic and parking issues.

Dollars & Sense

The mix of age, family makeup, and income levels makes Westgate one of the more diverse communities in Calgary. The comparatively more expensive areas of downtown are close at hand, but residents with less income can also easily enjoy places like Edworthy Park and Optimist Athletic Park for free. There really is something for everyone in Westgate.

Winston Drive Park

This stretch of parkland in the northwestern part of the community features a playground for young kids. There are also several benches and mature trees making it a great place for a picnic.

The park located in the heart of the community features numerous soccer fields and ball diamonds. It is located next to the Westgate Community Association, which also has an outdoor recreation rink.

Sarcee Trail Greenway

This path on the side of Sarcee Trail is a favourite spot for joggers and dog walkers. The paved path runs the length of Sarcee Trail from Bow Trail to 17 Avenue.
