NEIGHBOURHOOD

Carlton

Edmonton

Introduction

In the 1980s, much of the Carlton neighbourhood in northwest Edmonton was farmland. As the city grew, so did development in this area, and it continues growing today. Located between 167 Avenue and 153 Avenue, and 142 Street and 133 Street, the community’s proximity to Anthony Henday Drive has made it a popular residential option for daily commuters.

Lifestyle

Carlton is a family-friendly neighbourhood that offers plenty of parks and green space for young active families. There has been lots of new development since 2000, and that has brought in a much younger demographic. Close to Edmonton shopping centres and the city of St. Albert, Carlton has many attractive amenities for young couples looking for room to grow.

The Vibe

An active, vibrant community, this neighbourhood includes a man-made lake that's surrounded by lovely paths and a nearby playground. There is also a nature area on the western edge and a wetland in the neighbouring community to the east. As Carlton continues to grow, its vibe is shaped by the influx of new homeowners coming into the area.

Meet the Neighbours

This is a young, up-and-coming neighbourhood, demonstrated by the fact that 28 per cent of the population is under the age of 19 (according to 2011 Stats Canada census data). That number is likely to rise as new single-family housing continues to be built in the northern part of the community. According to that same data, household income levels show that this is becoming a wealthier community with disposable income.

In the Area

Carlton residents benefit from neighbouring the city of St. Albert, as that's where many popular restaurants and services are located. In the other direction, 137 Avenue offers major retail outlets. Christy’s Corner is another shopping and entertainment complex with a multi-screen cinema. For recreation, Henry Singer Park and the Victoria Soccer Club are close by. Servus Place and the Castle Downs YMCA offer swimming and fitness programs.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles

Carlton used to be a tough place to get in and out of, since St. Albert Trail was the only reliable way to access the city. Anthony Henday Drive has helped change that and residents now have quick access to other parts of Edmonton, Fort Saskatchewan, and CFB Edmonton. There are bus routes into the community, but few residents take public transit.

The Good, the Bad & the Rest

Carlton is as far northwest as you can go before crossing Edmonton's city limits. While Anthony Henday Drive has made it easier to get to other parts of Edmonton, heading downtown or to southeastern communities is still a long trek. For those who commute to CFB Edmonton, St. Albert, or to the Industrial Heartland area near Redwater, Carlton is an excellent spot for convenient access to and from work.

Dollars & Sense

Retail and major restaurant chains have blossomed in northwestern Edmonton since the late '90s. This is due to young families with disposable incomes moving into new developments. There is no shortage of choices for food and entertainment, from high-end establishments to affordable fare. This part of the city now has amenities to serve all income levels.
