The heart of Brampton, in the Peel region - Canada’s “flower city”, is Downtown Brampton, a neighbourhood which presents an inevitable juxtaposition of the old meeting the new. With highways 107 and 410 running along its northern and eastern boundaries, this uber leafy suburban-urban city core extends up to the outskirts of Queen Street East in the south and Chinguacousy Road in the west.
Downtown Brampton offers a unique feel, different from usual expectations one has of a downtown core. It has a small town, relaxed feel, but within a big city. The area is densely tree-lined, filled with historical landmarks and heritage properties showing its Victorian roots. Pedestrian-friendly sidewalks are welcoming and laid back where you can stroll, and not power walk to keep up with the office goers.
Downtown Brampton is a vibrant and colourful hub of community events like the Farmers’ Market at Market Square, skating activities and concerts in Gage Park, an annual car show - Classic Cars and Legendary Stars in July, the Rib 'n' Roll Rotary Club festival, Shakespeare in Garden Square near the Rose Theatre, the Flower City Parade, Art of Jazz Festival, Santa Claus Parade and New Year's Eve Festivities.
Downtown Brampton has seen a huge influx of South Asian immigrant population mainly due to its proximity to the Pearson International Airport, not to mention the prohibitive cost of living, real estate and taxes in the neighbouring Toronto area. Outside of English, and not unlike the rest of Brampton, the next most commonly spoken language in this area is Punjabi, followed by Urdu, Gujarati and Portuguese.
Folks residing in this area have quick access to a plethora of restaurants, parks, entertainment, cultural do’s, retail staples and fashion outlets which are always a short and scenic walk away. The Brampton Public Library, The YMCA and the Heritage Complex are a few of the many mentionable area attractions for the young and retired, alike.
Downtown Brampton is the regional hub for all the major transit systems that include Brampton Transit, Via Rail, Go Rail and Go Bus. Its proximity to highways 410 and 107 make it very accessible to other regions of the GTA. Area residents often walk to work or other amenities, given its high walkability score, and enjoy short, hassle-free drives to the international airport.
The most attractive feature of Downtown Brampton is its greenery and history. Burnt, red brick century homes exist in the lap of mature trees and bushes, pedestrians saunter along the streets in unhurried paces, while offices function quietly and unassumingly. People are friendly towards each other and there is an overall sense of ease in all things.
Living in Downtown Brampton is slightly more affordable than most areas in Toronto. According to consumer pricing surveys that included the rent index, a resident of Downtown Brampton would require a monthly income of approximately $4,000 to maintain the same standard of living that they can have for $5,000 in Toronto. Rental prices, real estate and even restaurant prices are lower.
