Ambleside is one of Edmonton’s newest neighbourhoods. Located in the deep southwest beyond Anthony Henday Drive and bordered on the south by Ellerslie Road, it runs from the Whitemud Creek Valley west to 170th Street. Ambleside is part of the Windermere area plan that was set up in 2005, and its design features many paths and parks for a more walkable community.
This is not your typical suburban neighbourhood of blocks and blocks of single-family homes. Ambleside is a comprehensive community with a mix of low- to high-density residential, office, and retail development. Lined with walkways between residences that lead to several picturesque parks and ponds, residents can enjoy the outdoors while still getting all their daily essentials at the nearby Currents of Windermere shopping plaza.
Ambleside is favoured by young families thanks to its proximity to all the necessary amenities. Residents can walk, bike, or jog the quiet tree-lined neighbourhood. It is designed to be a city within a city, so you won’t need to roam far to do the things you love. However, Anthony Henday Drive does make it easy to get to the other parts of the city quickly when you venture out.
Ambleside residents are mostly young couples, and many of them have young children. According to the 2011 Statistics Canada census, 17 per cent of the population is under the age of 10. It is a new, up-and-coming neighbourhood that attracts mid-to-high income earners looking to start their families in a safe, quiet neighbourhood.
Beyond the borders of Ambleside, there are plenty of recreational opportunities. Terwillegar Recreation Centre has swimming and fitness facilities and an indoor playground for the kids. There are three golf courses nearby, including the exclusive Windermere Golf Club. More shopping is available down Ellerslie Road, where the massive South Edmonton Common boasts more than 100 stores spanning 2.3 million sq. ft. of space.
Ambleside is designed for residents to have every convenience within their community, but Anthony Henday Drive allows you to easily access other areas of the city. The airport is only a few minutes away, and Terwillegar Drive and Fox Drive make the University of Alberta a fairly close destination. Bus routes are slowly increasing as public transit catches up to the city’s southern growth.
While it is billed as a city within a city with high walkability, don’t confuse this for urban living. Walking to big box stores like Walmart or Canadian Tire isn’t quite the same as downtown living, but the setup is ideal for small families or those looking for something more than a typical suburban life. It is also quite difficult to get downtown, so commuting there could prove frustrating.
The diversity of housing and the residents who live here is matched by the diversity of choices in what shopping is available. High-end clothing and restaurants attract those with extra disposable income, but there is also a Walmart and other less expensive options for families who may be on a tighter budget.

Gorgeously set on the secluded Whitemud Creek Valley, the 18-hole championship-level course follows the contours of the area. It takes its natural setting seriously and is a registered member of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program.
