Introduction

Blue Quill is in Edmonton’s southwest, named after Cree Chief Blue Quill who traded in Edmonton in the late 1890s. Its north of 23rd Avenue, west of 111th Street, tucked in the bend of Whitemud Creek Ravine South. Bordering neighbourhoods of Blue Quill Estates, Skyrattler and Sweetgrass are considered part of the Blue Quill area and are home to schools, community centres and natural areas.

Lifestyle

Families are in abundance in Blue Quill. In the summer you’ll find children riding their bikes to the park, families congregating at the community centre and parents lined up along the soccer field to watch their kids play an evening game. Residents keep busy with work and errands but take the time for a backyard barbeque, walk in the ravine or to recreate at the community centre or golf club.

The Vibe

Few main roads pass through Blue Quill, making it a quieter and more relaxed neighbourhood. Yards and homes are well maintained showing pride of ownership and making it an aesthetically pleasing place to live. Leave the peacefulness of the residential streets and you’ll be in the centre of busy commercial areas. You’ll enjoy being close to conveniences without having them intruding the neighbourhood.

Families with children at home make up 63 per cent of Blue Quill’s population, according to the latest report from Census Canada. Quite a few families have Asian or African origins, giving the neighbourhood rich cultural diversity. You can meet your neighbours at the numerous community events, activities and programs offered by the community league, located at the centre of the neighbourhood.

There are a couple strip-mall style plazas in Blue Quill offering restaurants, shopping, medical and dental clinics and other services. Zip down 23rd street to find major shopping centres and chain restaurants or find quiet in nature at Whitemud Creek Ravine. Post secondary institutes are in the area including CDI College and Taylor University College and Seminary.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles

The ideal south side location gives quick access to Calgary Trail leading out of town or to the Anthony Henday ring road which takes you almost anywhere in the city. Downtown commuters are best to catch the quick LRT with plenty of parking available at Century Park station and major bus routes run through the neighbourhood.

The Good, the Bad & the Rest

Crime rates have risen slightly in Blue Quill, but the community league is proposing initiatives to the City that will help prevent further crime and promote a safe community. Unrelated, another notable feature of Blue Quill is its close proximity to the massive Century Park transit station, perfect for downtown commuters.

Dollars & Sense

Housing is priced average to slightly above in Blue Quill, but there is a diverse range of housing sizes and styles that could potentially fit into any budget. Dining at locally operated restaurants and pubs won’t cost much, but expect higher prices for the larger restaurants nearby. All in, Blue Quill would suite those with an average to slightly above average income.
