NEIGHBOURHOOD

Queen Alexandra

Edmonton

Introduction

Located in south-central Edmonton, Queen Alexandra is one of Edmonton’s oldest neighbourhoods and was part of the original town of Strathcona, which was incorporated in 1899. Whyte Avenue, a cultural centre of Edmonton, is the north boundary and it forms a neat rectangle with the south boundary running along 67th Avenue between 109th to 104th Streets.

Lifestyle

Queen Alexandra residents are mixed between mobile and situated. According to the 2005 census, a third of the population had moved in the last year, while another third had lived in the area for more than five years. Whyte Avenue is a cultural hub for gourmands, sommeliers and partygoers, perfect for people who work on Whyte or students from the nearby University of Alberta.

The Vibe

The proximity of Whyte Avenue and its number of lively bars makes the area an ideal home for bartenders, servers and cooks. It's peaceful during the day as these night owls sleep, and tree-lined walks and parks invite residents to take a pleasant stroll. Locally-owned cafes and restaurants make Queen Alexandra a great off-Whyte place to hang out.

Meet the Neighbours

According to Statistics Canada, a third of the population is between 25 and 29 years old, and less than half have children. Half are of European descent, but there is a nice mix of cultures otherwise. The families here are mostly married couples, while single parents are the second highest group – with one in ten under the age of 19. Half of 2005 census respondents claimed no religion.

In the Area

Queen Alexandra features an arena, athletic fields and a leisure centre. There are five schools from elementary to high school and a seniors' housing complex on the west side of the neighbourhood. The Joe Morris Park is also on the western side and offers some lovely walking paths. The University of Alberta Hospital is a short journey away, while family clinics can be found in the surrounding neighbourhoods.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles

The City of Edmonton has plans to revitalize the sidewalks and roads in Queen Alexandra. The #9 and #52 bus routes can get you to downtown or Southgate, while buses running along Whyte can take you to the university or to the east end of Edmonton. 109th Street and Calgary Trail (104th Street) are main thoroughfares that give easy access to the city by car.

The Good, the Bad & the Rest

The closer you come to Whyte, the more robberies and break-and-enters can be found on the EPS Crime Map. Assaults and thefts are more common near Whyte, while theft and break-and-enters are uncommon south of 76th Avenue. However, the neighbourhood is quiet and peaceful away from Whyte. This central location is excellent for commutes to anywhere in the city and the local businesses make it a great community.

Dollars & Sense

With a popular part of Whyte acting as the north border, you can get a range of meals, beverages and entertainment for a great price. According to the 2005 census, the average household income is below $60,000. Renting an apartment or house is affordable for families and students sharing the household. Otherwise, a one-room apartment would be more expensive than a less central neighbourhood of Edmonton.
