The Hamptons

Edmonton

Introduction

The Hamptons is on the western edge of Edmonton by Anthony Henday Drive, which provides its eastern border. The neighbourhood extends to Winterburn Road to the west, 62nd Avenue to the north, and Lessard Road and 45th Avenue to the south. It is one of Edmonton’s newer neighbourhoods with development starting in the early 2000s.

Lifestyle

A quiet suburban neighbourhood, The Hamptons continues to grow. The family-friendly community here has one of the highest proportions of children in Edmonton. Its modern design incorporates plenty of lakes, ponds, and pathways that link the community together. Two schools were opened in 2012 to handle the growth, as new home construction is expected to continue for several years.

Dollars & Sense

A kid-centric community with working professional parents, The Hamptons has all the amenities of suburbia with a special focus on community programs. There are many new families busily ferrying their kids to soccer or hockey and other active programs. Anthony Henday Drive is a quick way to get to power retail centres located around the neighbourhood for shopping and family dining options.

The Good, the Bad & the Rest

Compared to some older neighbourhoods, The Hamptons is still quite underdeveloped. Two schools have opened in recent years, but both are already brimming to capacity as growth outmatches the services in the area. The neighbourhood is primarily comprised of low density residential units, so it is tough for renters – however, there are a few apartment-style condominium developments along the eastern edge of the community.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles

The construction of the Anthony Henday Drive ring road has made living on the outskirts of the city much easier. The Hamptons residents can now quickly access the airport or the north end in minutes. Whitemud Drive is another preferred route for getting into the city. Bus service operates throughout the neighbourhood and LRT expansion will bring improved transit to Lewis Estates, just north of The Hamptons.

In the Area

Just off the northeast corner of The Hamptons is Hampton Market, a large retail shopping complex with major restaurants, banks, and other amenities. With Anthony Henday Drive right next door, West Edmonton Mall can be accessed easily with a short drive. This area is also close to Callingwood, where the YMCA and Lois Hole Library are conveniently located.

Meet the Neighbours

Young families dominate The Hamptons demographics. In 2011 census data, nearly 70 per cent of residents were under the age of 40. It is a diverse community with residents from various ethnic backgrounds, though the largest demographic group is the Southeast Asian community. The Hamptons' upscale suburban lifestyle attracts higher income earners and working families.

The Vibe

According to 2011 census data, 20 per cent of residents in The Hamptons are under the age of 10. The burgeoning neighbourhood is ideal for young families, as it offers newer homes with a modern design in the suburbs. While it is on the edge of the city limits, the access to Anthony Henday Drive and Whitemud Drive makes the morning commute an easy one.
