NEIGHBOURHOOD

Twin Brooks

Edmonton

Introduction

Located where the Whitemud and Blackmud Creeks meet, Twin Brooks was given its name for the beautiful ravines that comprise the northern, western, and eastern borders. A long greenbelt separates the south border of Twin Brooks from the far-reaching Anthony Henday Drive. Twin Brooks is a newer community in this comfortable and wealthier region of Edmonton.

Lifestyle

One of the quietest suburbs in Edmonton, Twin Brooks will surprise new residents with its proximity to a busy freeway and the peacefulness within the community. Nature plays an important role in the area with ravines, walking trails, and community garden all within a short distance. The central greenspace near the ice rink plays host to the annual Fall barbecue and Winter Carnival.

The Vibe

Over 10 kilometres of suggested walking trails are open to residents. These trails wander through the Blackmud and Whitemud ravines and lead to points of interest and natural wonders. In the spring and fall, you can keep an eye out for industrious beavers making their dams across the creeks. The gas station is one of the few commercial businesses within the area, which is a rare thing for Edmonton communities.

Meet the Neighbours

The Maha Ganapathy Temple is located in a quiet area in the Blackmud Creek Ravine. It is open daily for adherents to the Hindu faith. According to the Statistics Canada 2011 census, married couples with post-secondary degrees raise their children in this family community. The average household income is $70,000 higher than the city average.

In the Area

Being a member of the Twin Brooks community league gives you access to the community garden. The Twin Brooks Public Health Centre, YMCA Childcare, and the George P. Nicholson Elementary School provide core community services. The two ravines are full of walking trails and points of interest to complement the multiple parks in the area.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles

Anthony Henday Drive is the powerhouse mover for your commute across Edmonton while 111 Street reaches all the way to 61 Avenue. Newer communities like this one are targeted to be served by Edmonton Transit in the future, as plans to run the LRT down 111 Street are in the works. Leisurely walking trails are the best way to see the community while driving is the best way to leave.

The Good, the Bad & the Rest

The best part of Twin Brooks may also be its prime challenge: there is a slight lack of commercial services, but this also keeps this family community quiet. Transit development has yet to keep up with the growth of the community, but walking trails and sidewalks make getting to the Century Park Transit Centre a quick and convenient jaunt.

Dollars & Sense

Homes can reach above the $1-million mark, according to YEG Is Home. Townhouses with attached garages are more popular for sale and range between a quarter and a half-million. Rentals are available and reasonably priced, but are picked up quickly. An inexpensive coffee at the Esso will see you on your way to nearby commercial services outside of Twin Brooks.
