Winnipeg

Introduction

The predominantly working-class community of East Elmwood is one of Winnipeg's older neighbourhoods and is home to a diverse population and housing styles. The area is bordered by the northern lot limit at Kent and Clyde roads, Planet Road to the east, Nairn Avenue to the south, and the Canadian Pacific Railway's Keewatin line to the west.

Lifestyle

A historic neighbourhood that got its start with the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway, East Elmwood is now home to a diverse populace that enjoys the pleasant parks, schools, and range of affordable housing options available here today. This residential area also boasts a number of shops and services, particularly along Nairn Avenue, and is just a short drive from the bustling Kildonan Place shopping centre.

Dollars & Sense

According to 2006 census results, East Elmwood residents had an average household income of $48,950, which was lower than the Winnipeg-wide average of $63,023. Luckily, house prices and rents are also lower here, which helps to balance out the overall cost of living. Locals can enjoy good value dining options at Kent Restaurant and Magic Sushi 2, while Chateau Lanes bowling offers affordable family entertainment.

The Good, the Bad & the Rest

East Elmwood's active community centre was lost to fire in March of 2011, but a new and improved structure is set to re-open in 2015. The new East Elmwood Community Centre, located in Keenleyside Park, is an 11,000-sq.-ft. building with a gymnasium, multi-purpose room, kitchen, skate change area, and greeting centre. The outdoor space offers basketball hoops, wading pool, play structure, outdoor movie area, and a future hockey rink.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles

Located a short distance from downtown Winnipeg, East Elmwood residents enjoy short commutes and good transit links. Most people rely on personal vehicles, though almost 17 per cent identified public transportation as their primary means of getting around (2006 census) – higher than the city average. Nairn and Talbot avenues are the main streets and provide easy access through the community while the airport is a manageable 25-minute drive away.

In the Area

Though primarily a residential neighbourhood, East Elmwood residents have convenient access to plenty of shops and services, from the smaller stores along Nairn Avenue to the nearby Kildonan Place shopping centre. Elementary school children can attend Kent Road School or the private Red River Valley Junior Academy, while older kids have nearby Elmwood High. A number of small parks give residents opportunities to get out and enjoy the outdoors.

Meet the Neighbours

The adult residents of East Elmwood are almost evenly split between married and single – although, as of the 2006 Statistics Canada census, there are less married couples living here than the city-wide average. At 64 per cent, the majority of households here are made up of one or two people only. However, larger families of three or more people are also well represented in this diverse community.

The Vibe

Now a vibrant community, East Elmwood developed slowly, with the western portion seeing residential construction shortly after the 1900s and the eastern portion undergoing development after the Second World War. Originally a highly industrialized area that was home to a meat packing plant, a furniture manufacturer, and a box factory, the neighbourhood has evolved to become almost entirely residential, featuring a variety of housing types and attractive, mature green spaces.
