Fairhaven is an affordable, established neighbourhood on the far western side of Saskatoon. Developed during the 1970s and 1980s, it’s a beautiful community with large trees and big yards. Fairhaven’s northern and western boundaries are Fairlight Drive, and it’s bordered on the east by Fairmont Drive, Clancy Drive, and Pendygrasse Road. In the south, the neighbourhood ends at the Canadian Pacific Railroad line.
Fairhaven offers an affordable, suburban lifestyle. The neighbourhood has a lot of potential for young families and single people looking to rent or buy their first home. With two elementary schools, a large park, a paddling pool, and close proximity to the Confederation Mall and shopping district, there is lots to see and do here. There are also regular bus routes and nearby civic centres, plus a medical clinic.
Fairhaven is an active community with quiet streets, large trees and well-kept homes. The neighbourhood’s large sidewalks make it walkable and its friendly atmosphere is popular with young families and older couples alike. A large 20-acre park is equipped with a toboggan hill, and an active community association runs the community garden. There are also recreational sports leagues in addition to arts, yoga lessons, and cooking classes.
According to a 2014 municipal profile, 4,973 people live in the Fairhaven district. The average age is 20 to 29 years old, however this is only accurate by a slim margin. The community is popular with all ages, including many young families and older couples. Most residents’ first language is English, however there is quite a lot of Tagalog (the language of the Philippines) spoken in the area.
Living in Fairhaven has a lot of advantages. The area offers two community elementary schools, the Catholic St. Mark Community School and the public Fairhaven School, which includes a branch of the Preston Early Learning Day Care Centre. Two high schools are also located in the nearby Blairmore neighbourhood, Bethlehem High School and Tommy Douglas Collegiate, connected by the public Shaw Centre.
Fairhaven’s main roads, Pendygrasse Road and Fairlight Drive, make getting around the community quite easy and convenient. Pendygrasse Road also connects to the commuter road, Circle Drive, offering access to anywhere in the city. Saskatoon’s bus service runs through the area, connecting to Confederation Mall, the University of Saskatchewan, Saskatchewan Polytechnic, and the downtown business district. For longer trips, the John Diefenbaker International Airport is located just 7.9 kilometres away.
While Fairhaven’s low rental prices attract a variety of people, it’s an up-and-coming neighbourhood with a lot of potential. The homes are well cared for, with lots of pride in ownership, and families can have a great quality of life for less. Although it’s located on the edge of Saskatoon, there are still plenty of amenities nearby. All in all, the community is well loved by its residents.
With its lower home and rental prices, Fairhaven is an affordable place to live and raise a family. Despite the area’s location, the bus service is convenient and the neighbourhood has free parking. The amenities are also close by, which means residents don’t have to drive very far to pick up groceries and other household goods.
