NEIGHBOURHOOD

The Ward

Guelph

Introduction

Old St. Patrick's Ward, colloquially known as The Ward, is one of Guelph's most storied, diverse and vibrant areas. Bordered by Wyndham, Elizabeth, Victoria and York streets, it is also known as the Two Rivers Neighbourhood in homage to its situation near the confluence of the Speed and the Eramosa.

Lifestyle

The Ward still as a historical reputation as a sketchy part of town – local lore includes stories of early 20th century prostitution and bootlegging. But its makeover came courtesy of a spontaneous, grassroots change and a rebranding as “Two Rivers.” Great community events include the Festival Italiano on Ferguson Street in July, the Two Rivers Festival, and the Two Rivers Neighbourhood Group’s Pumpking Promenade in Lyon Park following Halloween.

The Vibe

Quirky, quaint and occasionally gritty, The Ward is a mishmash of architectural styles and human cultures. Cosy wartime cottages nestle between towering Victorian houses and repurposed industrial spaces. For every student house with a standard Canadian flag window dressing, you'll find an impressively large and productive backyard farm, often complete with chickens. Small ethnic restaurants, community gardens and a local apiary help make The Ward the best neighbourhood in Guelph.

Meet the Neighbours

Young families, aging pensioners, musicians, artists, professionals and factory workers all inhabit The Ward, and contribute to its friendly atmosphere. Neighbours collaborate on murals, trade gardening tips and produce over backyard fences, and even make music in home studios and sheds. The Italian immigrant contingent gathers at the Italian Canadian Club, and others in the community congregate around the Two Rivers Neighbourhood Group’s space in the former Tytler Public School.

In the Area

The Ward’s history as a working-class, largely immigrant neighbourhood means it’s still a great bargain today. More families moving in has begun to put the squeeze on students and artists who have also traditionally called the neighbourhood home. But it’s still very much the place to be for thrifty types, most of whom spend a lot of their disposable income fixing up beautiful century homes bought for a song.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles

The Ward is conveniently located for highway travel in every direction. Within the city, The Ward can’t be beat for getting around without a car. It’s an easy 10-minute walk downtown for most residents, and at its farthest boundary wouldn’t take much longer, although residents by the river are far more likely to take advantage of the relatively calm traffic and extensive network of trails the area features.

The Good, the Bad & the Rest

Neighbourhood schools have changed recently, with Tytler public elementary closed and its population attending the new John Galt school just outside the area’s traditional boundaries. It is now home to the Two Rivers Neighbourhood Group, which offers an incredible array of resources to the community. The separate board’s Sacred Heart Public School on Huron street and attached Sacred Heart Parish church serve the Catholic contingent.

Dollars & Sense

Creative, outgoing types populate The Ward, but those seeking solitude may want to stick closer to Victoria. Neighbours really get to know each other, so if you’re not the type who wants the people next door popping their heads over the fence, look elsewhere. Vestiges of industry long gone give the place a slightly “wrong side of the tracks” feel, but low cost of living doesn’t mean low class citizens.
