Haney

Maple Ridge

Introduction

Traces of Maple Ridge’s past can be seen throughout Haney, the city’s historic downtown area. Haney’s southern boundary runs along the Fraser River. Its western boundary is just west of the Haney Bypass, follows Cliff Avenue, jogging up 221st, Dunbar, Delcrest and 222nd Streets. Along the north, the boundary runs along 124th Avenue until Edge Street, down Edge and continues on Lee and 123rd Avenues.

Lifestyle

Cycling to the farmers' market on a sunny summer’s day to shop for your weekly groceries, walking along 224th Street or Dewdney Trunk Road to pick up gluten-free bread or health food products — living a healthy lifestyle is possible in Haney thanks to the walkability and increasing revitalization of the area.

Dollars & Sense

There are no ritzy areas in Haney and the restaurants and coffee shops cater to those with no large budget to spend. It might take a few decades before Lululemon and Victoria’s Secret open their doors in Haney, but reasonably priced shops line its streets. Haney Place Mall will get a Wal-Mart to anchor its west side entrance, bringing back a store that offers basic necessities to local shoppers.

The Good, the Bad & the Rest

The revitalization of Haney has happened in fits and starts and the area is still plagued with typical "inner city issues," including homelessness and crime. But as the area continues to densify and with intense work from city hall to bring more vibrancy back to the downtown core, Haney is becoming a walkable neighbourhood with plenty of services and amenities, with festivals taking place during all four seasons.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles

Commuting from Haney to Vancouver is a breeze — the West Coast Express picks up passengers five times in the morning, taking them downtown, and five trains bring commuters home in the evening. A bus loop behind Haney Place Mall links the town centre to Port Coquitlam and Coquitlam to the west and Langley to the north. Shuttle buses connect Haney to neighbourhoods in the rural areas of Maple Ridge.

In the Area

Not only are there shops and services in Haney, the arts centre, known as the ACT, has performances several times a week from classical music to comedy shows to local and touring theatre productions. There are both elementary and high schools in the vicinity as well as a public library, service clubs and agencies offering volunteer opportunities and programming to all age levels.

Meet the Neighbours

Maple Ridge is focusing tons of energy on making Haney the place to live, shop and play and this has translated into a virtual building boom and made for more affordable, newer homes. The north end of Haney caters to seniors and is home to the second largest Royal Canadian Legion in Western Canada, but throughout the rest of the neighbourhood, there are families with children, couples and singles.

The Vibe

The verdant Memorial Peace Park sits in the heart of Haney, surrounded by recreational facilities, a first-rate arts centre, shops and services. The city has put a lot of effort into revitalizing Haney by encouraging dense housing — four-storey buildings, townhomes and towers. With two small malls, dozens of mom-and-pop shops and medical and dental offices, residents don’t even need to get in the car to find what they want.
