Harris Green

Victoria

Introduction

Harris Green is a small square of land next to Downtown Victoria, B.C. The borders are Pandora St. on the north, Cook St. to the east, Meares St. to the south and midway between Quadra and Blanshard Streets to the west. Despite the name, the area has little green space. Its major asset is a wide variety of restaurants.

Lifestyle

Those living in the area’s apartment buildings get the convenience of everything close by. There’s an intermingling of individuals across ages and across the social spectrum. The location of the only grocery store within walking distance of downtown, the center of this village is a community hub. Residents often run into their neighbours and friends here, making for a small town community feeling.

Dollars & Sense

Retail prices are close in alignment with downtown Victoria, meaning on the higher end. Independent and chain coffee shops are side by side with ethnic restaurants and retail art stores. Antique shops alternate with high end fashion boutiques. Housing includes subsidized apartment options in tall buildings and a mix of condominiums with higher than average prices.

The Good, the Bad & the Rest

Cherry blossoms light up the streets in springtime and put smiles on everyone’s faces. From the fashionably clad yogis to the antique treasure hunters to the retirees, government workers and street people, diversity is all around. With the large street population, there are individuals with obvious addiction and mental health issues. Despite this, most residents feel at home and reasonably safe in the neighbourhood.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles

Harris Green comprises just a few blocks so walking or cycling are the best ways to get around here. Street parking is at a premium and the commissionaires are unforgiving. Many buses pass through here on the way to downtown or to the more residential areas. The bus station, US ferries and float planes are a short walk over to the harbour in neighbouring downtown.

In the Area

Key amenities here are commercial in nature. This area is great for dining out, getting a tan, going to the gym, getting a computer fixed, taking a yoga class, picking up wine and flowers and attending a concert or play. There are no schools, community centres, or parks. Although, all of these are right outside the borders. There is a walk-in clinic and a Seventh-Day Adventists Church.

Meet the Neighbours

Long-term older residents and government workers mix with young professionals. With wide diversity, people also range in ages and backgrounds. The local population is a combination of long-time locals mixed with many from other parts of Canada who are drawn here for the mild climate and large number of visitors.

The Vibe

If laid-back bustling could be a concept, this area personifies it. People going to work, school or doing necessary errands are focused. Then there are those living off-peak, the entrepreneurs, artists, buskers, retirees and visitors, who are milling around the coffee shops and restaurants. On Fort St. are the high-end shoppers, antique hunters, new moms and yoga students.
