Nuns' Island

Montréal

Introduction

Nuns’ Island, officially called Île-des-Sœurs, is a quiet suburban island, part of the Verdun borough, located to the south east of the Island of Montreal. It is separated from Montreal by a narrow channel, with the Saint-Lawrence River surrounding it on all sides. Nuns’ Island is known for its peaceful living and its abundance of parks and green space.

Lifestyle

Nuns’ Island offers its residents a serene, suburban lifestyle minutes away from downtown Montreal. The island is comprised mainly of homes and condos, but there is a prominent business sector in the northern parts of the island. The Notre-Dame congregation of nuns occupied and farmed on the island until the late 1950s (thus the name), so the neighbourhood is fairly young.

The Vibe

Even though Nuns’ Island is only minutes from the city, you’d never know it by just walking down the quiet streets. The area is very residential, and gives off a strong “gated-community” feel. Because the island was mostly populated by nuns up until the late 1950s, the vibe is young and fresh, and a little posh in most places. It’s known for it’s various parks and bike paths.

Meet the Neighbours

Nuns’ Island is a popular place for young families and busy professionals who travel to the city for work, as the commute is quite short. It’s known to be more of a posh area, so you’ll most likely find yourself surrounded by well-educated individuals as well as few well-known personalities from the city.

In the Area

You’ll mostly see high-rise apartment complexes, condos, a few large dwellings and lots of row houses in the area, as it is primarily residential. Nuns’ Island is also well known their many parks, green spaces and waterfront paths. A small business sector on the northern part of the island is where you’ll find large offices like the Yellow Pages and Bell, as well as the vibrant Pointe-Nord community.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles

The Décarie expressway (Highway 15) runs through the northern tip of the island, connecting the neighbourhood with the south shore and the Island of Montreal. There is only one way on and off the island, and from there you can connect with the 15, and highway 10, which will lead you right into the city. Municipal buses run throughout the island.

The Good, the Bad & the Rest

Nuns’ Island is perfect for the family that enjoys the peace and quiet offered by most suburban neighbourhoods, while remaining in close proximity to the city. It’s a clean and well-coiffed area, with lots of green space and waterfront views on three sides. Since the area is quite residential, islanders must head into the city for daily activities and entertainment.

Dollars & Sense

Because Nuns’ Island is primarily residential, there isn’t too much to spend your money on, except for a few trendy cafés and restaurants. There are smaller franchise restaurants located near the business sector, as well a few charming spots in the young and fresh Pointe-Nord. A few luxury car dealerships are located in the area.
