Victoria Hills is not the newest or oldest neighbourhood in Kitchener, but it has plenty of amenities to offer residents. The area spans from Highland Road in the south to just north of Glasgow Street, Fischer Hallman on the west side and Belmont Avenue on the east. Within those borders, there’s plenty of green space, plus peace and quiet for those who crave easy living.
Using the word “sleepy” isn’t entirely accurate, but this is a community where people come to live and raise families. It’s not a must-go shopping destination, or a place that is crammed with pubs and restaurants. The most happening spots are playgrounds, community centres and family-friendly eateries. It’s a comfortable existence, and, if you want something more lively, it’s a short drive away.
It’s mainly about families in this area, so if you are expecting vibrant nightlife and oodles to do after 8 p.m., there’s bound to be disappointment. Families come here because it’s relatively safe and quiet. In Victoria Hills, neighbours know each other by name and likely their kids have play dates with one another.
Many residents here are new immigrants and second generation Canadians – mainly with European or Southeast Asian roots. It makes for a diverse, culturally rich area. Low and middle income residents coexist harmoniously with middle management types. Locals in the upper-income bracket are concentrated in the tony Belmont Village area.
This mature neighbourhood has had a chance to grow and bloom over the years. Its 1,200-plus residents are well served by half a dozen schools, shopping malls, parks and churches of various denominations. Located in a beautiful park setting, the Victoria Hills Community Centre is an important part of the area, providing preschool, career training, recreation facilities, arts and crafts classes. A slew of parks offer fun stuff like skating (Filsinger Park) and playgrounds (Gzowski Park).
Victoria Hills is perfectly situated between Waterloo and Kitchener. Highway access is easy via Westmount Road to Hwys. 7 and 8, the Conestoga Parkway. Bus service from Grand River Transit puts destinations throughout Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge within reach. The Region of Waterloo International Airport is a 20-minute drive.
First-time buyers and low-income families can live comfortably and experience the joys of homeownership. The area, which has a fairly high, population density, has had issues in the past with higher levels of crime (offences like breaking and entering), but a concerted effort of the police has helped curb the problems.
Victoria Hills is an affordable pocket, next to more expensive areas north and south.
