The community of Mission & Cliff-Bungalow is bordered by the beautiful Elbow River and 17th Avenue. Located in the South West quadrant of the city, Mission & Cliff-Bungalow is considered to be one of the most historic neighbourhoods in Calgary, rich with the history as the site of the former town known as Rouleauville.
Mission and Cliff-Bungalow is full of culture, character and vibrancy. Always bustling with pedestrians and cyclists, this is an incredibly active community. A nice mix of architecture keeps the neighbourhood interesting. An outdoorsy community, the Elbow River keeps residents active with rafting, running, cycling and even fishing. There is a big foodie lifestyle in Mission as well with plenty of great restaurants and eateries – even more opening everyday.
The 2013 flood devastated many properties and left a bad taste for people who had to leave the neighbourhood. Proximity to the Elbow River is definitely something to consider when looking at properties in Mission. On the other hand, this community sprung back with resilience and enthusiasm after the flood. It is a great neighbourhood to call home because it has just about everything you could ask for.
Mission is one of those neighbourhoods that is totally self-sufficient – you never have to leave to get exactly what you want. Several schools are in the immediate area including Catholic elementary and high schools, Montessori pre-school and other public schools. Mission is walking distance from the Sheldon Chumir Health Centre and includes a couple walk-in clinics, pharmacies and dental offices.
Mission and Cliff-Bungalow are typically a walking and cycling region of the city for local residents, however 4th Street, 2nd Street and Elbow Drive are all used as major commuting arteries for those working downtown. The Elbow River pathways are a cyclist’s paradise, connecting you to other great neighbourhoods. Public transit is reliable in Mission and the C-Train is about a 20-minute walk to Victoria Park or Erlton stations.
Since the 2013 flood, rental vacancies have dropped dramatically, making any available properties very expensive. Restaurants in Mission are higher-end, though there are still less expensive take-out pizza and Chinese food options. The same goes for coffee shops – a half dozen or so offer varying in price and clientele.
Mission and Cliff-Bungalow embrace a range of residents, from families to young professionals to residents who have lived here for decades. While the neighbourhood may seem like a haven for yuppie couples, the diversity of families and seniors defies the stereotype. Baby strollers and young families are common sight on the weekend, evidence that more young families are choosing to live inner-city as opposed to moving to the suburbs.
This eclectic and vibrant community embraces the true meaning of being neighbourly – especially since the 2013 flood. Residents are health-focused, affluent foodies who love to spend time outdoors. You’ll see plenty of dogs enjoying long walks or cosying up to their owners outside a Mission cafe. Mission often sets trends for other Calgary neighbourhoods thanks to 4th Street’s fantastic mix of retail and restaurants.
One of the newest additions to 4th Street’s foodie scene, Bocce is the sister restaurant to one of Calgary’s long-time favourites, Mercato. Fresh Italian cuisine will satiate your appetite, in the bright and modern interior.
