Montreal West

Montréal

Introduction

Montreal West is a small suburban town on the island of Montreal situated just west of the downtown core wedged in between NDG, Cote-Saint-Luc and Ville St-Pierre. It runs north to south along Avenue Connaught as its east border and Promenade Sharon as its west border. It stretches as far as Cote-Saint-Luc road to the north and reaches down to Autoroute 20 to the south.

Lifestyle

Living in Montreal West would feel similar to living in a lot of the other suburbs on the island of Montreal. There are plenty of families and kids of all ages in the area, and most of the cultural activities are catered to this demographic. The area is smaller, and wealthier, than other suburbs giving it an exclusive feeling at times.

The Vibe

The Montreal West neighbourhood has a mostly quaint suburban vibe. It's neither noisy nor busy like much of the island. Well-trimmed lawns, beautiful front gardens and multi-car driveways are a definite fixture of the area. It can slightly exclusive part of the time, but that’s only because it’s a close-knit community.

Meet the Neighbours

The town is mostly home to families with children or retirement-aged couples who come from a variety of well-to-do backgrounds. You'll also spot a few students in the area due to the town's proximity to one of Concordia University's campuses, but many of them live with their families as opposed to on their own.

In the Area

There's quite a few spots for kids nearby, including a few local arenas for ice skating and junior league hockey as well as other sports fields and parks. For the parents, there's the massive Meadowbrook Golf Club in nearby Côte Saint-Luc and a local curling club near the town hall.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles

Montreal West is just outside of Montreal's metro zone, so there are no subway stations here. Fortunately, there's a train station and a small bus terminal that can get you into the city proper. In the area, it's easy to get around by foot, but a car is useful if you plan on going shopping, even for groceries.

The Good, the Bad & the Rest

While the majority of the area is quite gorgeous and suburban, there are parts of the neighbourhood that run along nearby industrial areas, down in Ville St-Pierre and along the highway, making for less appealing scenery. Fortunately, those areas are only at the outskirts of the neighbourhood and usually out of sight.

Dollars & Sense

Westminster Avenue is the main commercial strip in the Montreal West neighbourhood, with Sherbrooke Boulevard as the only other option to do shopping. There are some good options for groceries and dining, but for more amenities you might be better off heading into nearby Côte Saint-Luc or NDG for big purchases.
