NEIGHBOURHOOD

Saint-Léonard

Montréal

Introduction

Home to many Italian-Canadians, the vibrant Saint-Leonard neighbourhood is located in the northeastern part of the Island of Montreal, not too far east from the city. It is bordered to the north by Montreal North, to the east by Anjou, to the west by Villeray and to the south by Rosemont-La Petite Patrie.

Lifestyle

While Saint-Leonard is primarily a residential area, its proximity to the city makes it a lot more vibrant than your average suburb. The community often gathers on the bustling Jarry Street, which is where you’ll find restaurants, shops, public transportation, cafés and bakeries, as well as the beautiful Saint-Leonard Church.

The Vibe

Because of the large population of Italians, Saint-Leonard has been dubbed Citta Italiana, and is considered Montreal’s second Little Italy. There are many Italian community centres, as well as an abundance of Italian cafés and bakeries. When walking down the streets, you’ll be drawn to the many white brick row homes and backyard gardens.

Meet the Neighbours

The Saint-Leonard borough has one of the highest concentrations of Italian-Canadians in the city, and it’s very noticeable in the area. At certain times of year, you can find many neighbours and extended families outside for Italian cultural celebrations. Italian aside, the community often associates with the French language, although services are offered in both English and French.

In the Area

Because of the large Italian community in the area, you will find many Italian bakeries, bars, cafés, and specialty food shops along Jean-Talon East and Jarry Street. You will also find many community centres, most notably the Leonardo Da Vinci Centre. Saint-Leonard is also home to many parks and green space.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles

Highway 40 crosses Saint-Leonard from east to west, allowing easy access to other parts of the city. There are many major streets running through the neighbourhood including Jean-Talon, Jarry, Lacordaire and Langelier. Many local buses run through the area, connecting residents to the city. There is also a commuter train stop located nearby.

The Good, the Bad & the Rest

Saint-Leonard is a tight knit community that’s not too far from the city. It’s a vibrant place, full of culture and life, and home to some of the best Italian cafés in all of Montreal. Some may say the area is a little too removed, and that traffic to and from can be a nightmare, especially on the 40.

Dollars & Sense

Saint-Leonard isn’t considered one of Montreal's most luxurious neighbourhoods, but that doesn't mean it's a cheap place to live. Home prices and rent are above the overall average for Montreal. There are also many mom and pop cafés and eateries, as well as larger shopping malls and big box retailers.
