Located in the southwest area of the Island of Montreal, Verdun is nestled between the northern and southern boundaries of the Décarie autoroute and the borough of LaSalle. To the West it is bordered by the Canal de l’Aqueduc and to the East by the St. Lawrence River.
Lifestyle
Verdun has a small-town feel, yet it is minutes away from downtown Montreal. If you’re a student looking for a cafe to study or a new family looking to enroll your son in a hockey team, this neighborhood offers a slew of amenities for the range of residents it caters to. In recent years, many new restaurants and bistros have moved in to the area to further increase its appeal.
The Vibe
This neighborhood is always bustling with life. Morning, afternoon and evenings, you can find a mix of residents grabbing food at one of the highly rated bistros or restaurants found on Wellington Street, while outdoor-types ride bikes along the St. Lawrence River. The area offers no shortage of activities and there are a number of different places to discover.

Verdun has a diverse and multicultural population. The proximity to downtown Montreal and access to affordable housing makes it a popular area for students and individuals who live under the poverty line. However high-income households are also found in the area and the number of single residents is about equal to the number of families living in the neighbourhood.
In the Area
The area of Verdun houses a number of schools, churches, parks and other public amenities. Among it’s most popular offerings is the Verdun Auditorium; The Natatorium where Quebec’s first and largest pool was built; the École de cirque de Verdun, one of Canada’s leading circus schools; and the Municipal Greenhouse which hosts a day camp and other special events throughout the summer.

Planes, Trains & Automobiles
Verdun is accessible by four metro stations: Verdun, De l’Église, LaSalle, and Jolicoeur. The area is also served by a significant bus network that can direct citizens around and outside the borough in a short amount of time. For drivers, the area is served by autoroutes 15 and 20. Similar to downtown, paid parking is available, but can be hard to find.
The Good, the Bad & the Rest
The proximity to downtown Montreal and the St. Lawrence River makes Verdun a highly coveted area. Like most Montreal neighbourhoods, frequent road construction will be an issue for drivers, but at least public transportation is available. Citizen diversity is one of the greatest aspects of this area. Poverty is apparent, but does not define the district.
Dollars & Sense
A healthy mix of restaurants, coffee shops and convenience stores are available in a variety of price ranges. The majority of local cafes and bistros offer lunch and afternoon snacks at an affordable price, but if you’re looking for a little more you can also have supper at a pricey restaurant.
