The City of North Vancouver is a small community located at the base of the North Shore Mountains. It is bounded to the south by Burrard Inlet, and the District of North Vancouver to the east and west. With a land area of approximately 12 square kilometers, the city is blessed with an abundance of Mother Nature’s best outdoor playgrounds.
North Vancouverites enjoy great dining, eclectic shopping districts, theatre, and many cultural events and festivals – think the wildly sexy Caribbean Days Festival, North Shore Jazz Festival and the Artists for Conservation Festival up on Grouse Mountain. North Vancouver had its share of homegrown celebrities including singer/songwriter Bryan Adams, who began rehearsing in his mom’s basement.
Residents are pretty happy here. Who wouldn’t be? Mother Nature blessed the city with some heavy hitting natural attractions—skiing, snowboarding, and hiking on Grouse, Cypress, and Mount Seymour; boating, kayaking, and canoeing near Deep Cove, walking Lynn Canyon and Capilano Suspension bridges, fishing, golfing, and mountain biking. Add a lively art scene, great restaurants, fabulous shopping, and quaint villages and yes, residents here often sport big smiles!
Home to approximately 50,926 residents, the city’s median age is 41.2. Seniors 65+ make up 13 per cent of the population. This is a culturally diverse city, with 44 per cent with a Mother Tongue other than English or French—that’s greater than the rest of Canada (20.6 per cent). For the first time, Tagalog (Filipino) replaced the Chinese language/dialects as third most prevalent first language behind Persian (Farsi).
North Vancouver features a plethora of parks, fields, trails and recreational centres, including the Harry Jerome and John Braithwaite community centres. It is also home to the Lions Gate Hospital, a whopping 25 elementary schools and seven high schools. For shopoholics no need to worry – there are great shopping hubs along Lonsdale Avenue and also along Marine Drive, including Capilano Mall and Park and Tilford.
Highway 1 is at the north of the City limits—which links into West Vancouver and over into Vancouver and Burnaby. Good transit exists but one of the most beautiful and relaxing way to get downtown is on the Seabus from Lonsdale Quay. Your leisurely commute takes 15 minutes. There are also good bike lanes which interconnect with others in the region.
This alpine suburb came to realize that the single-family homes its residents were able to buy decades ago are out of reach for many young adults and families. While rising home values benefit the owners, it’s not allowing for a diverse age group to live here. The good news is that its historical downtown core—Lonsdale—is emerging as a walkable waterfront with several lowrise mixed-use towers. Traffic congestion? YES!
North Vancouver is considered an affluent city thanks to its proximity to a sweeping mountain, the easily accessible ocean and beautiful views of the city vistas. Prices for nearly everything you can buy are slightly above average compared to many other municipalities, but still not as expensive as West Vancouver.
