Parkallen is located in south-central Edmonton bound by 71st and 61st avenue north-sound with busy 109th street and 113th street bordering east and west. Its close proximity to downtown and the University of Alberta make it sought after neighbourhood. This location, along with its remarkably friendly atmosphere, charming homes, schools and close-knit community make it a popular choice for growing families.
Residents of Parkallen enjoy a comfortable lifestyle and spend time caring for their home and neighbourhood. According to the Census of Canada, 65 per cent of homes are owner occupied and 40 per cent earn over $100,000 a year. There is a rich arts community and the neighbourhood hosts the annual Art in the Park festival. Weekends are spent at the park, neighbourhood cafe or visiting at the community hall.
Parkallen has a diverse economic range, with the average household income being slightly higher than the city average according to the latest census data. But the community has a very down-to-earth feel about it. There are no high-priced coffee shops or restaurants, and local businesses are supported by residents and visitors alike.
According to the city of Edmonton’s latest census numbers, more than 80% of the homes in Parkallen were built in 1960 or before. There have been a few spots of infill but most are older, single detached homes from the post-World War II era. The city and community partnered in 2012 on a neighbourhood renewal project to freshen up the aging roads and sidewalks.
With the addition of the South Campus LRT station in 2008, the Parkallen neighbourhood became a more attractive option for public transit users. Many still drive to work though, and 113th Street and 109th Street are the main commuter corridors to provide quick routes to any part of the city. There is green space buffering noise pollution for those living on the edges of the community.
One of the benefits of living in Parkallen is the proximity to so many great amenities. For sports enthusiasts, Foote Field and the Saville Sports Centre are right next door. And Whitemud Park isn't far away either, featuring a toboggan hill, hiking trails, and picnic sites. Snow Valley Ski Hill is within a few minutes' drive, and shoppers love to stroll down Whyte Avenue or south to the Southgate Centre.
Young urban singles and families love the mature trees in this older neighbourhood, not to mention the easy access to parks, the river valley, downtown shopping, and the university. Parkallen residents have average to above-average incomes according to Statistics Canada's 2011 census. The community league is active in providing festivals and events for its members, making this a very close-knit neighbourhood.
Parkallen has a true sense of community. Situated between two main arterial roads, the neighbourhood is almost a tiny town unto itself. It has its own mix of commercial buildings and is close to major shopping areas. It is easy to head to the downtown core, the river valley, or the University of Alberta, which is attractive to both young professional couples and students looking for rental accommodations.
Located next to the Parkallen Community League Hall, the outdoor rink is a popular spot in the winter time to go for a skate or find a game of shinny.
